I thought this was interesting, maybe you will too!
Since the VHSL went to the 6 classification system in 2013, Region C and/or D has won the state golf championship 16 of 20 times over the lower three classifications.  17 championships in 21 tries if you add Blacksburg's 2017 AAAA title.  Go back to 2000, and we can add another 17 state titles when the VHSL only recognized three classifications statewide.  That's 34 state championships in 19 years!
2019 - George Wythe (A), Radford (AA) 2018 - George Wythe (A), Union (AA),, Abingdon (AAA) 2017 - Auburn (A), Abingdon (AAA), Blacksburg (AAAA) 2016 - George Wythe (A), Giles (AA), Blacksburg (AAA) 2015 - George Wythe (A), Abingdon (AAA) 2014 - Hidden Valley (AAA) 2013 - Holston (A), Graham (AA), Tunstall (AAA) This end of the state dominates in a sport perceived to be for the elite.  Yet, our end of the state is perceived to be much less than elite by the eastern end of the state.  Funny how perception can be so far from reality!

12 minutes before our game and we only have 1 team. But that's normal for a home game. Lol

30 minutes to kickoff in Galax and we only have 1 football team!

They didn't drop Radford by choice.  Radford's head coach chose not to renew the series.  One win in six tries with an average score of 40-16 does that, I suppose.  Replacing Radford isn't as easy as one would think for a school like Galax.  First, you need a willing opponent with an open date for an out-of-district game.  Second, the "willing opponent" component of that equation isn't very simple for a school like Galax and a head coach like Mark Dixon.  As was famously said about Bear Bryant, "he can take his'n and beat your'n and then he can turn around and take your'n and beat his'n!"
The Martinsville series doesn't look very solid right now but give it another year or two.  They have had four head coaches in six seasons.  They just need some continuity.  The JV has some talent.  They were the only team to score more than 6 points against Galax's JV's all season.  Unless you count Martinsville's varsity, which scored three times against the Galax JV's on a Friday night in September.  It's rumored, Dixon and Palmer are building toward a series in the near future but some previously scheduled home-and-home series have to conclude first.
I'm curious, how many Galax games have you attended in person this season?  How about past seasons?

In my opinion, we have a lot of teams content with dominating a weak-as-pond-water district, winning a few games in a watered down playoff format, losing by 55 when they eventually meet quality competition, and calling themselves a successful program.  But that's just my opinion!
The playoffs should be shortened by a week.  For the VHSL, it's a money grab.  Therefore, 15 games to win a state championship it is!

Not familiar with enough of the QB's across SWVA to list a top 5.
Cole Pickett of Galax has 93 completions from 161 attempts for 1,734 yards, 27 TD's and 6 INT's through 9 games.
The Simmons kid from George Wythe is also an exceptional high school QB.  Not sure of his season stats.

Peaking in high school isn't something to be proud or envious of in my opinion!
With that said, Riverheads is on another level than anyone else in Class 1, including Galax.  I think Galax can beat them this season given this may be the best team Dixon has fielded.  But they will need help from Riverheads in order to complete that task.  Helping opponents is something Casto/Norcross coached teams rarely do so, good luck with that.  I know Dixon and Company are up for the challenge though.  Dixon lead teams won't back down or shy away from anyone.

OMT......Old Military Trick!  It provides a layer of insulation to the organization that is going to bear the brunt of criticism.  Nobody is going to criticize the Region but everyone will criticize VHSL.  Being able to say "it's not our decision" can be handy and effective insulation.
With that said, I don't see anything VHSL could or should get involved with in this situation.

PH has no shot. No offense to anyone, but the only team in 1A with a realistic shot at Riverheads is Galax.
Riverheads dismantled the top team in 2A Region B last week, they would be a threat to win the 2A title. I thought Chilhowie was better last year than PH this year and Riverheads was slightly worse and Warriors got routed.

Narrows split the MED with Grayson County in 1998, not Pocahontas.  Pocahontas lost regular season district games to Fort Chiswell (25-10), Grayson County (28-14), and Galax (15-14).  They beat Narrows 36-28 while Narrows beat Grayson County 12-7.  Grayson and Narrows finished with one loss in district play each while Pocahontas lost 3 district contests. Pacahontas would lose to Covington in round 1 of the D1 playoffs 31-6.  Narrows beat Galax in the opening round of the playoffs 8-0 and lost to Covington the following week 41-8.  Grayson lost to Giles in the opening round of the D2 playoffs 28-21.

Agreed!  Grayson was 1A-Division 2 in 1998 and was never Division 1.  They would have never had the opportunity to play Narrows or Pocahontas in the postseason.  Grayson's enrollment in the late 90's would have been in the neighborhood of 700.  Virginia DOE statistics suggest an enrollment of 675 in 2003-2004, which is the farthest the statistics go back on the VADOE website.

That was my brothers senior season.  Grayson beat Pocahontas head to head but the game was later awarded to Pocahontas by forfeit.  Grayson got a summer transfer from Alleghany, NC who, as it turned out, shouldn't have been eligible.  Grayson's head coach/athletic director dropped the ball in doing his due diligence in verifying the kids eligibility with the VHSL.  Grayson had gone 6-4 in the regular season and 5-0 in the MED and lost 28-7 to Radford in the opening round of the D2 playoffs.  They ultimately finished 0-11 after the forfeits.
