  1. Tough call at the end of the game. I couldn't see it from where I was so I can't say whether it was the right call or not. Why would you punt it to Taymon? Freddie dodged a bullet there. Altogether it was an evenly matched game. One of the better defensive games I've seen at Mitchell. The G-Men will be ok but they have to figure out how to get Taymon the ball more. When he lined up on the outside Bluefield would put their safety above the corner and take him completely out of the picture. When you have a guy that can take it to the house anytime he touches the ball you have to get him the ball in space. Imo you have to put him in the slot or in the backfield more. He has to touch the ball more than 7 or 8 times if graham wants to go far.

  2. Fundamentals first, work on execution and be consistent. Just because we had explosive offense last year you can't expect the same this year. Yes the dogs were lethargic on offense in the 1st half but they started clicking and doing better in the second. The coaches will be fine. Talk about mixing it up, how about that fake punt? It didn't work but almost. These guys should be proud of their effort. The season is going to get much harder. Yes the officials were absolutely terrible. Don't know how they missed several things that happened right in front of them but they missed it both ways. Did it affect the outcome, no. Guys stick with it and more will see the dedication and hard work and we can build back. Be proud that you held their offense to 21 and they got 14 of those on short fields. I'm proud of what the dogs did last night. Just keep your heads high and continue to give it your all. Off my soapbox now.

  5. This was posted from a good friend of mine and a fellow teammate back in the day and a coach and role model for our young guys in the community today! I want to take a moment and recognize what our varsity football team done last night. They started off slow. They had a lot of nerves flowing. This is because of their youth. A lot of them are freshman and sophomore players. They fought back against va highs first team and held them scoreless in the second half. A few big plays were made by this young team. They are learning. They are gaining experience. They are taking advantage of this opportunity at playing earlier in their high school careers. The coaches are instilling a hard nosed work ethic into these players. They are making them accountable for their actions. They are molding them into tougher football players. And more importantly tougher hard working individuals. That is a key ingredient to success. Isn't that what we want for our kids. To be resilient and goal oriented. Not look for ways out. Or find excuses. Now as parents and supporters In our area we need to remember success isn't a over night process. It doesn't come gift wrapped. We have to teach our kids to be supportive and positive. We have to teach them that when you get hit in the mouth you have to respond. We need to teach them how to respect our coaches and buy in. The negativity will eat out the core. This has been our problem for years. Now as a community and parents we need to get on board and support them. I want everyone to think about a teacher or coach who pushed you hard in the past. They are probably the ones you respect the most. Or learned the most from.

  6. That's part or most of what the problem is there now, the boys need some stability and consistency in the program, not looking for new coaches after 1 game. They are young and a new system and small numbers. Whats needed is patience and support ! It may very well be a long season and tough to watch at times, but give them some time and let the coaches do their job. I know you may not want to hear that from a Richlands fan, but I do care about their program and kids because my daughter went to school there and was a cheerleader there back in the early 2000's and I use to go to all of their games back then and still try to keep up with what is going on there, so I would love to see them get the program back to where it once was and should be.

  7. Me an some of my friends rolled up to Richlands tonight do a lil scouting. I have to say I seen one of the saddest thing I've had to watch in awhile. As we were standing near the end zone the D&O line was warming up. Number 56 is hurt for richlands as he was watching his team warm up he just started crying his eyes out it was hard for us to watch. We called him over said a prayer with him an tried to lighten him up it has to be hard going through that. I hope everything goes well for the young man very good looking football player an seems to be a good kid.

  9. I thought both Graham and Bluefield did a good job staying disciplined on defense. Very few big plays tonight. Graham did a better job of tackling. Bluefield's play calling wasn't the greatest either. On one 3 and out the three plays were fullback dive, qb sneak on 2nd and long, and another fullback dive on 3rd and long. I was kind of happy it wasn't a 60-55 shootout.

  10. I had a pretty clear view of that play and I thought he crossed the line. Was very close though. Graham did not execute well enough to win, and thus it wasn't. Great game to watch. Well done Beavers.

    Bburg

It's gonna take a team with a lot of speed to compete with the Bruins. They are beatable but it's gonna take a special team. Giles was able to move the ball some. Left 2 scores off the board when we got close to or inside the red zone and stalled out. I'm sticking with my 8-2 prediction for Giles with another loss coming to Graham or Glenvar. We have a lot of youth on the defensive side. The coaches will have them ready come playoff time.

  17. I think bburg offense is as good or better than Richlands or Appomattox of last year...this team has a hell of a lot of weapons and a very good QB to get them the ball

  18. Almost certainly going to be a Clarke County-Goochland title game this year. Appomattox stands a fair chance of getting back there if not Clarke or Goochland.

  19. I've said it for years that Giles has an excellent coaching staff from 8th grade all the way up to varsity, and for once I didn't hear a fan blaming the coaches for anything which is unusual. Giles got put in positions to have a couple more scores, but Blacksburg's D really turned up the heat once we got on their side of the field. We got our butts kicked, but I'm not one bit disappointed in our effort tonight.

  20. I thought Bluefield looked pretty good defensively, but you could tell in the second half at least, that the Bluefield Coach was trying his best to kill clock with the run and limit Graham's possessions. Graham simply has no down field passing game. They can only try vertical side line routes and the kid at QB simply can't get the ball from point A to point B. Also, Graham's coaching staff seems to realize his inaccuracy and they seemed to have little to know plays called in the passing game that utilizes the middle of the field out of fear of the inaccuracy of the QB. Bluefield knew this. They played run and a vertical-sideline passing defense, and that is exactly what Richlands and Giles will do. If Graham makes the switch at QB, it completely opens up the middle of the field in the passing game not just 5 yards, but 15-20 yards off the ball and they became a dangerous offense and team. There is just no way that any coach could set down, watch that tape (of the second half) and say to themselves, lets not give another kid a few reps at QB. That's not a knock on number 10 either, because he is a dangerous, dangerous athlete that seems like he can house it, but to do that, he needs to house it with somebody else touching the ball first at the snap, and him touching the ball second. It's incredible to me from watching them at GC and in the second half of the Bluefield game that their coach simply can't see that, or doesn't choose to see it, or whatever the case is.

    Week 1 Scoreboard: 8/25/2017g

I saw the replay and it clearly looked like his knee was still off the ground. Great game. Officiating questionable but can't blame officiating on a goal line stand at the end of the game. Bluefield was the better team tonight when it mattered most. Also a great game plan by Bluefield. Kept Taymon out of the game.

  22. Graham's defense was stellar, really. Vastly improved over years' past.

  23. Offensive play-calling was suspect all night. Throwing 40-yard bombs when prudence would have served them better in 2nd-and-mid situations. Running draws and sweeps into traffic. Barely got Taymon Cooke involved all night. Not a stellar plan to beat a quality team. I don't think the loss in and of itself is a bad thing. May serve to focus the team if they utilize it correctly.

  26. Wow. I watched the replay several times and I thought he fumbled with the knee 2" off the ground. I heard from several that were watching online that agreed.

  27. I was watching on the stream and from the view they showed it looked like his knee was down first. Incredibly close though.
