This hiring process is going to be interesting to say the least.  Defiantly an appealing job.....but, will they require whoever gets it to run the single-wing?  With it basically being May and school getting out before long, seems like maybe this will go to an assistant for at least a year.

For the Williams did a great job crowd, here are irrefutable facts. In the last 7 years, he had 6 losing seasons. Set a GHS record for both points against and average points against in a season.  The last 7 years had a negative point differential which has Never happened in the History of Giles high school. Not just during the Ragsdale years but EVER. So it started well but ended in an absolute disaster. Giles has been getting their ass handed to them in the off-season for years and their record has reflected that. Williams let one of the most prominent programs in the entire state go to absolute crap.

So, since Spring sports are going and the football board is typically quiet, let me raise a question. How much of the recent years cited a result of timing, whether talent or culture related? In other words, has Giles changed?
For context, I have commented on here many times comparing Richlands under Mance, and Graham under Palmer. I still believe the Blue Tornado coaching job has been more impressive (admittedly biased) due to differences in available talent.

Before Mance left it would be hard to argue that it was not a precipitous decline in talent that coincided with Graham’s rise. I’m not insinuating that this was a factor because he has proven his worth as a head coach in SC, but to illustrate the possibility of a major talent change influences results and how someone could be remembered. There are obviously other factors related to Richlands struggles, but there is no denying there is less talent comparatively.

So did Williams simply stay too long to experience either a drop in talent, football not as important in Giles, or both? Just posing the question.

Stayed too long. And a factor in the drop off in talent, was probably 5 to 10, guys would simply not come out for varsity football to play for Williams. He was widely disliked, and widely disrespected. 2 or 3 guys not coming out a year can majorly effect a single A sized program. Hopefully a new coach can get these guys to stay past JV

Giles hasn't changed, the culture did. Williams did good reeling off the heels of Ragsdale. After all of the former coaches influences left, so did the program. Giles just took a little longer to completely collapse to a coaching change as say a Galax. He worked his first few years but everyone knows he checked out years ago. Giles talent is the same as it always was but people make excuses otherwise. Even with "a drop in talent" a drop in classification would nullify it. Lazy coaches running a shit program is 💯 the problem at Giles. Time for a change and im glad it's happening.

Stayed too long imo and a HUGE drop in talent...and I mean HUGE

Do you honestly think pearisburg va was just blessed with talent for 30 years and it suddenly just stopped? 🤣 Coaches and the things they do in the off season makes that talent. You realize how stupid you sound right?

Hopefully the new coach can run something other than the single wing. Football is slipping away from Giles imo.

Not agreeing or disagreeing, but did the wing translate into some of those results due to its novelty?
For example, I do believe the Spartans had more talent comparatively than now, but defending the single wing was tougher because you don’t see it often.
Again, for comparison, Mance and crew were ahead of the game in learning and using the spread compared to his peers. I believe the greater talent level mixed with others not being able to defend due to its novelty, contributed to multiple state finals.

I seen an interview one time talking about Giles Single Wing being so deadly largely in part because a lot of the schools success came when almost every offense in SWVA ran an under center type offense. Not saying that's true or not true but makes a lot of sense.  Much easier to prepare for now because teams see some form of shotgun style offense weekly.  Shotgun formations with misdirection is literally what most teams do now. Would have been a foreign affair for defenses in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's. Giles won a lot of games through the years against more talented teams because of that offense. There's still single wing success all over the country but just not at Giles. Williams single wing and Ragsdales doesn't even look the same. Running the play clock down to zero all the time (even when your behind) probably isn't a recipe for success either. Hopefully Giles finds their guy that will both run the single wing and be dedicated to the program.  Coaches can change a culture and Giles NEEDS that!!

We had a lot more talent than we've had in the last 5 years or so...look at what we have had the last 5 years or so...not much

So you're saying that even if Steve Ragsdale was still coaching, the results over the 5 or 6 years would of been the same?

Not saying that at all...but anyone can look and see the talent isn't close to what it once was....or at least i thought most could.

I've never compared Jeff to ragsdale....one is a legend and the other isn't
