Why do GC fans deserve a winning program? It seems to be a recurring theme. How are GC fans different from any other school? I understand expect but not deserve.

The safest bet of all time is that JSB and Ridgeview won't sniff the 1A State Title game ?

The new school is suppose to open in 2019. It combines North, South and most of Central it will have around 1700 students and be 6A. The Colonial Heights Middle School is loaded with Talent and the base of athletes will come from there. I can't see GC getting 90 students, because I don't know if they can handle 90 students. If the kids come they will come through the elementary system, there may be half dozen of so from Bloomingdale and maybe a few from Rock Springs area but that shouldn't cause a dramatic spike in enrollment.

  10. The whole problem with the playoff system in VA now is over-inclusion, plain and simple. The pre-2010 system was equally as poor, wherein multitudes of 8+ win teams got shafted because some team like Rye Cove would win its awful district with a 5-5 record. Adding an extra week in 2010 literally doubled the number of teams that made the postseason in most districts, and that's far too many. I like the four-region system now, but just half the number of playoff teams. Neither Lee County nor Grayson County (currently 7th and 8th in 2D) should sniff a playoff berth. A Top 4 of Union, Graham, Marion, and Ridgeview/VHS seems an accurate fit for rewarding play and performance thus far.

  11. I'm not sure there are eight better Region D AA teams. Union, Graham, VHS, Marion, RV, Marion, Battle, then who? Giles/Glenvar are Region C IIRC.

I agree with you on the power schools coming from the East in 1A, but am not sure on 2A. I think 2A may be a bit closer. What would help the West in 1A is.... Galax and George Wythe need to be Galax and George Wythe again. Both appear a bit down this year. More important, one of the schools in my area really needs to rise up. Perhaps Appalachia? LOL, well, that's not going to happen anymore, but some 1A school in this corner needs to become like Galax or George Wythe and supplement the West with another very tough 1A program in far SWVA. Additionally, something between Wytheville, Bristol, and the Kentucky border becoming a solid program would also benefit (Chilhowie). Chilhowie is better this year, but it ain't there yet. In the East, Essex and Sussex are much like George Wythe and Galax. Both are good programs and they range from outstanding (state title challenging years) to 2nd round of the playoffs and out years, but Riverheads is a beast. They supposedly lost a ton of seniors and talent last year and just didn't miss a beat. The team they have this year is supposed to be one year away from next year according to the Richmond Newspaper.

Didn't know about Battle and Ridgeview, but no......the same applies. The chances of any other team in Class 1A winning a state title this year are similar, even with Battle and Ridgeview being 2A. That leaves Chilhowie and George Wythe as the only other 2 in the West than can play with Galax. Again, Riverheads is 25-30 points at LEAST better than all 3 of them. Even though Battle and Ridgeview are 2A, go ahead and add them in there also. Riverheads beats both of them by at least 25-30 also.

Many 2A teams in C and D could beat Galax but 1A C and D is weak with the exception of Galax and GW and I guess Chilhowie. And I agree that 1A state champion comes from A or B

John Battle and Ridgeview and Chilhowie and George Wythe can play with Galax. All 5 are very close. By season's end, it doesn't matter because neither of the 5 are getting close to a Class 1A state title this year. The East had 3 teams (Riverheads, Essex, Sussex) that are at LEAST 15 points better and 2 of those 3 teams in the East are 20+ points better, and 1 of those teams (Riverheads) is 25-30 points better. Union, Graham, and Giles have a better chance of winning the whole thing in Class 2A even with Appo in the picture compared to a SWVA team winning a title in 1A this year. Next year is different and things change, but for this year, it's not happening for SWVA in 1A. As a matter of fact, if Appo wins the state title against a team from the West or East (however the playoffs work out), I bet the score of that game is closer than the score of the 1A team in the East in their state title game, IF....again...IF that state title game is against someone in the West. I don't know how the playoffs workout, but if their is crossbracketing or whatever, then two teams from the East will be playing in the Class 1A state title game, again, if the playoff brackets allow it. I don't want to get into the playoff system and cross bracketing, etc. The point I'm making is, the gap between Riverheads and the rest of the 1A West is greater this year, 2017, than the gap between Appo and the rest of 2A Virginia (Union, Graham, Giles, RE Lee, Goochland, Poquoson, etc).

After seeing Chilhowie, it wouldn't be crazy to consider them as well. They're a pretty tough 1A team. They lost by a combined 8 points to Marion and GW. From what I can tell, they are on par with GW. They had GW down 14-0 at one point and GW had to block a game tying FG at the end to escape with the win. Their blowout loss to VHS came only when the Bearcats' offense finally woke up at the end of the 3rd, and looked like normal thru the 4th.

I know they aren't as good but neither is the rest of 1A West. GW is the only team in C or D that I think can beat them

  20. If you are too obtuse to understand numbers above and how the accomplishment of getting in has been diminished over the past few years, I don't feel the need to hold your hand and walk you through it. By your reasoning, why even have playoffs...just give 'em all a trophy after week 10 and pump up the basketballs...no reason to hurt their little feeling by leaving them out.

  21. "Good" and "Sorry" teams are not always defined by their regular season won-loss records. If there was a system in place that somehow made teams play equal schedules then record would be important. But as it is where schools in the same class play widely different schedules so far as competition is concerned, I like the rating system as it is much better.

I don’t see him coming back to VA. If he completes 5 years in TN, he is vested in their retirement system as well as VA’s. He can’t be more than a couple years away from that.

  27. GC proved Friday night that they can throw the ball when they let Sallee stay in the pocket and attempt shorter passes instead of a streak every play when he is rolling out. (Pats self on back because I preached it for 7 weeks now). DeAndre Mack probably isn't a runningback, but he has potential to being a threat offensively for GC the next 2 seasons. Maybe he is best suited in the slot. That is the only positives that really came out of last week. It's still very concerning we cannot run the football, cannot get stops on defense, and our play caller ditches what has worked for 70 yards then tries to go back with his non-existent offense. Webb will be a big loss for GC as he plays both sides of the ball. He will miss the rest of the season and needs surgery to repair his knee. Prayers for him, it's never easy to see a young man's career ended due to an injury. So if GC can come out, throw the ball around and stay away from the under center stuff unless in short yardage they can perform better than they have. It will not be a big enough change to put the Devils in the win column. All I can hope for the last 4 weeks is for the boys in blue is to hang in there, fight every down, play for pride. Maybe one day if these boys are faced with adversity, they can fight threw it, and keep chuggin along even when things are not going their way. Maybe they pull out this memory and say "I made it then, I can make it now". I talked to a few players Friday, I simply told them "hang in there" with a pat on the back. These players are playing their hearts out despite the crappy situation they are in. Some of them told me they are fighting as hard as they can and won't quit, even if they are winless. As a fan, giving 100% for the name on the front of your jersey and for you brothers is all I can ask for right now. Will the upset happen on Friday? Highly doubtful, but I just hope we can get these kids threw the season without anymore serious injuries and start fixing things that need to be fixed in about month for the sake of our program. I know I've rubbed a few people wrong on here this season. I just hate to lose and hate seeing these boy's hard work since the day after the Glenvar loss go to wayside. These boys (and myself) had high hopes about this season. Some things started unraveling after the South loss and it's been a downhill spiral since. My opinion is that the program, players, and lastly the fans deserve better than what we have right now. We need to fix things that need to be fixed in the off season and quickly. Maybe the guy I thought wasn't the guy might actually be the guy after seeing him cheer on the players during the games, make his rounds and encourage his former players after games on Friday's, and he is actually helping the kids with injuries during his planning period with treatment. Maybe he deserves a shot at the helm. Safe travels down I-81 to Legion Field on Friday 'Cane fans.
