His right foot is clearly on the line & the ref was right there to make the determination. I doubt anyone gets reprimanded or any call overturned. I believe in 4Q , Floyd County had five fouls & VH had two. They overturned a call giving out of bounds to Floyd changing it to a jump ball which VH had the possession arrow. We all know sometimes calls are 50/50, sometimes refs get it wrong but they weren’t trying to cheat for Floyd County. Inundating the VHSL with emails and phone calls over the refs in this game seems rather juvenile to me. Mountain Football 1 Quote

Yeah as far as the refs being fair both teams benefited from calls, i just thought it was a 3, I can see how the refs rewarded it a 2. I can talk about this now since the season is over Va High only had a starting 5, they had nobody coming off the bench that could average 5pts, all you had to do is get them in foul trouble and then you could take a team like Lebanon and beat them. That's what Floyd did tonight Quote
Observer Posted March 5 Report Posted March 5 The situation at Floyd has really bothered me to the point I didn't sleep very well last night. Several things stood out to me when I went back and watched it a few times. 1. The behavior of the Va High players was ridiculous, but what made it even worse was that the coaches allowed it to happen. 2. What if the fan that came out of the bleachers had a weapon, or even acted like he did? Look how many innocent people could have been impacted. 3. All of the Floyd fans that came out of the crowd. I get it that you think you're helping, but that could have made things much worse than they already were. 4. The swift action of the police. Could they have gotten to the fan quicker? Yes!! But I'm sure they weren't thinking that someone would come out of the crowd, and it takes a couple seconds to register when something like that happens. 5. Kudos to the Floyd coaches for getting their players off the court. That's what a coach should do to protect his players. I've seen people complaining on social media that games like this should be played at a neutral site in a bigger gym. The location and size of a gym shouldn't dictate how a game is played out. People need to grow up and act like adults. And adults that are supposed to be in charge of kids need to step up and do their jobs!!! Jags52, Mountain Football, Gridiron60 and 2 others 4 1 Quote

Nobody in Bristol will share it, but Woolen's foot was definitely on the line as he went up to shoot! Ref made the right call! Quote

If anyone wants a better view of the scuffle go search up Martin T Pounds on FB and one of his shared posts is a much higher quality video of what happened. Quote

Bristol City Schools should be ashamed of how those players, coaches and fans represented their school system last night. It is 100% an adults in the room problem. I am by no way saying the players acted are not their fault but they learn that from somewhere. You cannot tell me it is a school issue because basketball is the ONLY sport it is that big of an issue in. Patterson does a great job in the summer and the fall of teaching these boys how to be men, giving them discipline and learning how to act during competition but then it is like they forget all of that once basketball starts. Then when baseball rolls back around (at least when Daniels was the coach) they go back to having decent sportsmanship. The way some of the players on that team ran there mouth to Floyd's students section, the officials, and each other was hard to watch and they should have been on the bench. If they put the same focus on the game that they did on talking trash then the game doesn't even go to overtime and we get to watch Graham VA High for the 6th time this year. Instead the coaches and parents of those players allowed them to act like that and probably reward that behavior and VA High finally had a crew of officials that were not going to take any crap from a 17 year old kid and it cost them. I really hope the guy that stormed the court thinking he was some kind of bad ass spent the night in jail because as much as I love high school sports at the end of the day it is a game and its not that serious. They are getting all worked up just to get the chance to lose to John Marshall by 40 in the championship game! Gridiron60 and breckt 2 Quote

There has been an incident involving both the girls' and boys' teams just this season. It seems as though the administration has no control over their players or fans. Complete agree. If you have watched the boys or girls play for Virginia High the last few years this behavior is no surprise. They have behaved poorly for a while now and it was just a matter of time before something like this took place. Quote

It's time we have metal detectors for all high school ball games, and all bags be checked just like for any other event that people attend. These gyms are just tinder boxes for something violent to happen as emotions soar. If there was anyone there with a weapon other than law enforment, that is down right scary. 4. State Tournament games should not be held in high school gyms. Period. Real Sasquatch, breckt and Bcats 3 Quote
Stelley Posted March 5 Report Posted March 5 Don’t condone this type of behavior at all but if all the posts saying how badly v high was treated and the racism they face then I’m slightly okay with it. Even from the start of the nfhs broadcast you can hear an announcer being very sarcastic and say “well if they were going to show up you would expect them to be here by now.” Then right before tipoff v high was still shooting and Floyd comes over and tries to bully them back to their bench. Floyd County was lining up for the National anthem. The V - High kids kept shooting (over top of the Floyd players). Some of the Facebook comments are ridiculous. I implore all of you to watch the game. I commend the administrators of Floyd County for stepping in and preventing something that could have been much worse, initiated by players behaving poorly and a fan of V High going onto the court to confront the refs. Blame Floyd all you want, but V High needs to take accountability for their own actions I have been to many, many sporting events at Floyd County and have never experienced anything close to what some are describing, so I have my own doubts about these claims. (Not saying they are false..) However, if comments were made, that is not condonable either. Regardless, there is no excuse for going onto the court during a game and putting hands on a ref, regardless of what anybody is saying or how they are acting. Anyway, there are 2 sides to every story, I suppose. Gridiron60 1 Quote

RichlandsAlum Posted March 5 Report Posted March 5 Having seen the video, I'm curious about the technical foul call. I saw the referee repeatedly ask the Virginia High kid for the ball and the Bearcat player just drop it. But had there been some odd interaction before that? It's the official's prerogative but there appeared to be some dissension among the crew and I imagine that's a call that will be reviewed and discussed quite a bit within officials organizations. (Responses/comments from officials on this board certainly welcome.) Quote
Gridiron60 Posted March 5 Report Posted March 5 Not sure if it’s true or verifiable but I read a post that Virginia High did several thousands dollars worth of damage to Floyd locker room. On a different note, anyone know when & where Graham and Floyd will play? Quote
