RV has created an issue in that the majority of the should-be 9th grade athletes (8-10) held back last year and are 8th graders this year.  It creates a gap the year before them (why the JV team isn't that good) and it suppresses playing time for the class behind it (7th graders and true 8th graders not coming out).  It is usually done with the skill position players....the glory boys as I call them.  Lol.  It is more rare to see the OL/DL kids do it.  
Times have changed...not sure for the better.  I don't remember one kid on my middle school team that was a sports related hold-back.  We held back two of ours...one due to the COVID year and the other for maturity/academic performance reasons.  I don't regret those decisions as it seemed to work out for both of them.  But some or these kids are up to 18-20 months older than kids in their class.

I worry about teams that are stout at the LOS and can get athletes in space, SH really was able to wear Union down and then gash them. I don’t know if any 2D team has that kind of depth but Union is far from unbeatable. I’d like to see the passing game develop a bit more, Union has an absolutely loaded WR group. The run game gets the press and rightfully so (no one enjoys tackling Keith Chandler I promise) but if Union has punish loaded boxes by attacking middle of the field with Huff, Bostic, Bunch and Anderson (brother), it’ll be a tough night for a defense. 
 
That is the one thing I’ve not seen Union develop much, passing in the middle of the field. With so much Skill talent, if they can consistently hit slants and in routes to go with the deep balls, no reason they shouldn’t score 40 points per game.

Union goes 9-1 they host absolutely if its between Union and Appo in the semis. I'm saying if Union has a slip against GC or RV and Union wins Region D, having 2 losses on the season, they would have a strong chance of having to travel to a 7-2 Appo. If Graham slips against Pulaski and Graham wins D finishing with 2 losses, same for them. 
Radford of course appears to be not going less than 9-1. Good chance to finish 10-0. If Radford finishes 9-1, I don't know if a 9-1 Union outpoints them. What I'm saying is, if Union or Graham slips and finishes with 2 regular season losses, and Appo beats Radford, it's still a very good chance a 7-2 Appo would outpoint an 8-2 Union or Graham. 
Appo plays Gretna next in their 4th game. When Gretnas current record is counted with Appos other 3 opponents already played, their combined record is 12-2. 
With the other 5 remaining opponents left on Appos schedule after Gretna, those teams combined record right now is 13-5 and none of them has a losing record right now and 3 of those 5 have winning records. For whatever reason, teams like Nelson County, Chatham, Buckingham, Altavista, and Dan River are scratching out wins and giving Appo major rider points. Of course, Rustburg is vicious this year and Heritage is Heritage, so Appo is going to benefit from those two all year. Neither of those two will go less than 7-3, and both could go 9-1.

Gate City could be 0-century and still come out hard against Union.  I believe it'll be another one score kind of game.  24-21 either way

I dunno, it’s so hard to gauge right now because Union has not been tested at all whereas Graham had the tough fight with Bluefield. 
 
If Clements is healthy, I can’t see any 2D teams being within two scores. 

Haha…I don’t mind a good train horn when the home team makes a great play or scores a TD but a grown a$$ man blowing it from huddle through the time the opposing team (a bunch of teenage boys) snaps the ball is a bit juvenile in my opinion. Not to say others who love it are wrong we just have different opinions. 😂😂😂 Maybe that “hostile” environment will have those Hilltoppers running to the restroom. 😂😂😂

I tend to agree, which is why I am always hesitant to blame coaches. That also explains my skepticism when it comes to results due only to work ethic, play calling, etc. They certainly help and are your only controllable variables. The Jimmies and Joes are usually blessings related to location (unless recruiting efforts are made). 
 
As far as fan support, right or wrong and discussed before, I don’t think many schools have better fans inherently with some variability among other places. Frankly, Richlands fans have experienced arguably more extremes of success and futility than most schools around. That explains the “fair weather fans” when compared to the heights. In other words a greater fluctuation is observed. If I recall correctly, Union hasn’t had a truly bad season since consolidation (.745 winning percentage). I think the on-field success does a great deal to explain fan support. In other words, the weather is almost always fair. On the flip side, Tazewell’s mediocrity also explains consistent support.

Clements needs to heal until AFTER the Union game don’t wanna rush these things 

If Richlands doesn’t finish last in SWD, it’s as top heavy as the M7 for sure. They were just not competitive for any moment in the game. The bad teams around here have seemingly multipled while the good teams have shrunk.
