When he was at Pound, he ran the same I formation stuff that Rick Mullins ran at Clintwood.  The one year he was at Central, they ran rocket sweep and variations.  I'd say he will stick with wing. It's been successful thus far, plus the JV and Middle school teams run it. I'd say you'll see more screens and draws, something ti slow down the d-line,  which was missing for the last few years.

I think I have to agree with you. I initially thought Rhodes would be a good fit, but his struggle to retain coaches from year to year and lack of winning is concerning. I spoke with a guy in C-wood at the dealership the other day whose son played at ES and he said they have had a different guy calling the offense every year because Rhodes either fires them or they want to go elsewhere. Luke's success seemed to have happened because he was able to keep that core group of coaches and people together. Mullins knows the environment at Central, knows the kids, and has been around long enough to prove he knows what he is doing.

Here’s a hard pill to swallow:
Union is good but not the juggernaut that people in Big Stone think they are.

It was in the first half because Central felt the need to go for it on 4th and goal a couple of times outside the 5. Those coaching decisions probably cost them the first game.

Warriors are riding high after stifling Union. I say they ride that momentum into this game and score a lot, in very little time. They’ll be up big at halftime and put the reserves in for some experience. I think the Generals can score a fair bit against the younger group so the final score may be deceiving. Warriors win 48-21

Copied this from the Facebook group I run, Mountain Empire High School Sports Discussion. Wanted to post it here as well.
    October 15, 1999.
22 years ago today, two of the most memorable high school football games ever in Southwest Virginia played out roughly 10 miles away from one another.
The Haysi Tigers fell behind 28-0 to the Pound Wildcats in the first half of their game at Dotson-Mullins Field. The Tigers would pull off an improbable comeback winning 34-28 in OT.
Meanwhile at Carroll Dale Stadium in Wise, the JJ Kelly Indians were pulling off a monumental upset at home against the Powell Valley Vikings. The Big Stone Gap crew were in the midst of a 34 game winning streak and showed no signs of slowing down over the first half of the 99 season. The Indians played ball control all night and stunned all of SWVA winning 19-14.
The aftermath of that night is well known. Pound would recover from the loss to Haysi and make it all the way to Lynchburg to play in the Class 1, Division 1 state title game, losing to Surry County.
The Vikings downfall would continue as they fell in the first round of the Class 1, Division 2 playoffs to the Clintwood Greenwave.
Haysi would fall to Honaker also in the first round of the Class 1, Division 2 playoffs.
Kelly, even with the monumental upset of the Vikings, failed to even get to the postseason, finishing with a 6-4 record.
To all of my SWVA folks in the group, were you at either game that night? What are your memories of either game?
Or, if you were at another game, talk about that. Lol. It's the one night I vividly remember even years later, since I was at both games back and forth.

Having watched both.  Centrals linebackers is its sweet spot on defense.  They are all fast, incredible lateral movement for High School linebackers and very tough.  Meaning, they very easily take on the block from the fullback and can not get taken out of the play trying to tackle the trailing running back.  They lose no ground with the opponents lead blocker and very quickly disengage from the lead block and get two hands on the running back.  They also cover in space very well with the opponents ends and backs on pass routes.  They did a marvelous job against Christiansburg.  Lastly, perfect technique (which is coaching).  They always seem to be in the right positions.  I agree with the one poster on Central's linebackers.  Best linebacking group of actually ANY team I've seen play this year.  I've seen C-Curg, Union, Graham, Bluefield, Appo, Union, Ridgeview, Radford, Giles, Galax, and even Riverheads.  They have 3 linebackers at Central that are very, very good.  Now, it's not the best defense I've seen.  Not the best team I've seen.  But, when dialing in specifically to the iinebacker group, it's the best unit I've seen.

3 but with their rotations, those positions were shared anyway.  They essentially are fully intact.

Scoring 7 points in the 3rd quarter is running up the score?  Graham could have scored again with a first and goal in the 4th and chose to run a freshman with the first teams in with both teams, ran off tackle .  The last series of the game featured Richlands 1st team offense  against Grahams 2nd team defense.  I dont get at all the running up the score talk.   Graham was very conservative, the entire 2nd half.  Mostly ran the QB off tackle.

I look for ridgeview to replace Trenton with Cannon Hill @ running back! Cannon was the freshman a few years ago that made his name on Defense. He must have been hurt last year?

I feel like Burton returns quite a bit of talent and they view this as a much bigger game. I may be wrong, but RV still has Abingdon, Wise and Union ahead. This is Burtons second biggest (or biggest) game all year, I think they'll be motivated to prove they're a legit threat in 1D. I'm not sure on RV, with the COVID stuff last year, I just didn't see them as much so I'm not sure what to expect. Then there's the Adkins void, teams don't usually lose a player of that caliber and improve.

But again I've been wrong over the years way more than I've been right so anyone actually listening to me, I question their sanity.

That Appo/Draft game was fun to watch. Im surprised Draft stayed as close as they did with the number of miscues they had. They never gave up. You're right, it seems no matter what the score is Appo finds a way to win. That speaks volumes for their players and coaches.
All in all I'm glad the kids got to play football. Good luck to all the seniors in your future endeavors.

Just got back home. No cell service whatsoever in Augusta County. A blind squirrel could have seen this outcome. Riverheads is three deep at every position. Galax simply didn’t have the bodies to stay with them.

Proud of the effort Galax put forth. Those kids never gave up!
