I agree with you there. What has made Richlands so hard to beat over the years the the elite level of defense they play. Mance was very good at taking away your best player or play and making you win with option number 2. Just about everyone is the area has gone to at least some version of the spread because its all a numbers game and it gives you a chance to win in places if you have lesser athletes and a qb that can distribute the ball and run a little. I would say any coach under the age of 40 is going to run some sort of spread concept. Richlands is going to run what ever the new coach knows and what ever fits the players they have. If the Webb kid is there in the spring leaving him solo while you try to run the power I or split back veer would be the biggest waste of talent I have ever seen.2 points -

😂😂😂😂 objectivity has waved bye bye to some people. Isaiah definitely first team in District and Region. He’s a great player with flaws that either become more or less apparent depending on who you pull for. Central most talented team in the M7-but they don’t have a flow to them that seems natural.2 points -

Awesome read and story Brady, thank you. This is bittersweet for me because of personal connections. Sitting in the stands, seeing the Blues come out for warmups, Coach Mance with his visor on during warm weather. Can remember a game with Falcons, I believe 2006, it was a monsoon that night. Sheltered up near the press box, but still was soaked by end of game. Remembering the game with Bulldogs for region title in 2008, so cold, but so exciting. Came away with a "W" next to the lighting R. Close, but a win none-the-less. Remembering 2006, Austin's scamper on a 4th and 19th in the championship game. The INT he picked to end the game and seal the championship!!! Was so nervous that 4th qtr had to get up from bleachers and go stand at the top, praying all the while. The 2010 championship game with Poquoson that should have been a win for the Blues. Zebras had other plans. Coach Mance always so gracious to the opposing teams and coaches. They say behind every good man "there is a good woman", well, Ann is surely that. She worked countless hours along side and behind the scenes, helping make the program the success it became. An era has ended, but memories, what memories. Knowing Coach Mance's work ethic, I expect good things for the Loris Lions. Blessings to you Coach Mance and Ann2 points -

Wow Stan. Way to be a Debbie Downer. The article talks about the only public high school EVER in the history of high school basketball to have three consecutive 2,000 point scorers, and you try to downplay the accomplishment. *shakes head* I played on one of those “bad” teams during the ‘80’s. We would not have belonged on the same court as the teams GC has fielded the last several years. SWVA is not a basketball hot spot. It has never been. However, that does not detract from this accomplishment. There are a lot of high school basketball cold spots in the nation, but this is the first time this has ever happened. Let’s see........you are 704,000 times more likely to be struck by lightning TWICE than you are to have this scoring accomplishment happen.......and you try to down play it. * shakes head ever so slowly as I reach for the submit button”2 points -

Lol what in the world are you even talking about? College recruiters see what they need...McClung had plenty of attitude to his game too and it has served him well. Ervin was pretty reserved and he’s having plenty of success. Playing with emotion can be called “being a crybaby” if you are an opposing fan. Playing calmly and with no emotion can be construed as “being lazy” if you are an opposing fan. The mirror is your friend-if you can look at yourself and be ok with heckling a teenager who can’t defend himself, then more power to you.1 point -

Rumors are probably flying around like TVs off the shelves on Black Friday. I heard Wells was interested too. I believe Snake was let go by Mance and you could ask him if Ronnie Davis is interested. They're brothers. Davis is already HC of girls' softball. That's a lot to take on, HC of two varsity programs but I guess others do it at other places. The seasons are different technically but really football is year round anymore with the off-season weightlifting, 7 on 7s in June, etc. I'd say we'll know shortly. Is there a set number of days positions have to be posted?1 point -
I didn't say he wasn't good. I If i was picking a team he wouldn't be on it. The games ive seen him play he is a selfish player and does have an attitude problem in my opinion. If Im putting a group of talented kids together to play other teams he isn't someone i would wont on the team1 point

Region 4D girls and boys brackets are already posted on VHSL site.1 point -
And that's why you won't be putting any teams together, you can't see past your own hate, and be objective about talent. Assuming someone defending him is him is absurd. There are those of us mature adults that can look at a player objectively and judge them based on how they play.1 point

Completely disagree with this statement. Look at the offenses a majority of teams run today. Teams are spread out wide to create space for drives or three point shots if help comes to stop the drive. There may be a maximum of one ball screen set before a shot is attempted. In the 1980s & 1990s teams were running offenses that set a lot more screens which brought physicality to the game. There used to be post players who could bang in the paint and score with their back to the basket. In todays game posts are content to shoot threes and not go to work down low. Teams are much softer today.1 point -

I think history shows that all the assistants should receive credit along with Mance, and he has spoken highly of them every year. Never did hear Mance say the success the Blues had was all because of him. Snake was a great defensive coach as Graham can attest to, and when he left Richlands, it changed the defense and really showed.1 point -

I won't argue against that at all, but saying Isaiah isn't an All-M7 player was a ridiculous statement. I'm by no means gonna cut TJ or Wise any slack at all but to deny IM is a good basketball player and one of the 7-8 best in the M7 is silly. Dean is far and away M7 Player of the Year, but I would be surprised if Wise doesn't have two first team All-M7 players.1 point -
I played in the 90's. It was a different game. The game is ridiculously physical now. With today's pace and physical play, the quality of officials is demonstrated nightly. We have had many games totaling close to 40 fouls for both teams. Not taking anything away from the talent of McClung, Ervin or Dean but the amount of free throws they got during a season would not have happened back then. If you scored 40+ then, I would guess only 5/6 would be from the line. I watched McClung quite a bit and can remember games where he was pushing 20 free throws. Not saying he wouldn't have scored other ways but it's easier to score more points when the clocks not running. I also don't think you will see individual scoring like this happen again in Virginia now that they have started the stupid running clock rule after 30 pt lead.1 point

To say McAmis is not All-District is far fetched to me. He is a pretty good basketball player! I have to agree that Hayes is the better all around player on the team, due to his ability to drive and create a lot on his own, his defense, and his rebounding ability is something in my opinion that makes him better all around. Shooting is one of McAmis' strong points, and if he gets hot, watch out he can bury a team very quick. If it is an off night for him, he still puts up decent numbers, but forces some shots. I believe a lot of people base their opinion of Isaiah, based on their take of TJ and dislike for the Warriors. Yes, Isaiah does get frustrated and sometimes it comes out and gets him in trouble, but what teenager doesn't get frustrated and do something out of character at some point. If you leave out peoples dislike for the Warriors and TJ, and look strictly out how the kid plays basketball, everyone knows he is a good basketball player and loves to compete.1 point -

Great job on this Brady. Good to show all the history and the fact that coach Mance made such an impact on our area. The next HC will have some gigantic shoes to fill. Mance will forever be remembered as the coach that brought "Friday Night Lights" to Richlands. GO BLUES!!!1 point -

We rented a house in Surfside last year and rented a golf cart for the week. One of the most relaxing weeks that I've ever had. Myrtle's too hectic for my tastes, especially with a 5 year old. It's also very dangerous these days.1 point
