Kids aren't the same everywhere you go. Take a bunch of kids right now from a school that isn't used to winning on a yearly basis and put them at Graham, Union, or Richlands and tell me how much they would like the coach. Winning programs don't just show up in the fall, there is a lot of work that has to be done in the offseason and some kids may not like that if they aren't used to it. I'm not saying Reed would turn GC around by any means but you can't just throw something like "ask what kids at Central or Abingdon think about him." If they aren't used to winning then more than likely they aren't used to putting in the work that winning programs expect out of their players.

  6. From what I can gather Chilhowie seems to wear you down. They have running backs galore and those running backs will run over you instead of letting you tackle them. This wears on you during the game and by the 4th quarter they are running untouched down the field. On tape the secondary looks very fast but do not turn around during coverage. Tough team and a tough out during the playoffs.

  7. This game will feature two of the best quarterbacks in 1A West. This is also two teams that will likely see each other again in the playoffs. JIB's Houston Thacker threw the ball 30 times against Union and expect more of the same Friday. Chilhowie had a few breakdowns in the secondary last week against Marion but Robinson will clean that up. Chilhowie's QB Zack Cale was already quite the talent last season, but he may be the most improved player on the team this season. His arm strength and accuracy are noticeably better over last year. The uptick in confidence and poise is enabling him to see the field better while allowing plays to develop downfield. The Raiders are much improved over last season and should be able to hang with the Warriors for a while. The quarterback play may be a toss-up but JIB cannot match the running game of Sanchez, Blevins and Company. Chilhowie 36 John Ira Burton 18

Talk to former players at Abingdon and Wise Central and ask them if Reed is good at getting kids out to play football or developing good relationships with his players. GC alum may be drinking the Kool Aid because of loyalty or desperation but he's not turning that program around. Could he do a worse job thank Akers? Probably not, but he isn't going to get the numbers up or win anytime in the near future which would be the final nail in the coffin.

  10. Problem with Cuz's is never know how long will have to wait to get a seat if they are busy. Plus every time I ever went there the service sometimes is very long. Good note above though, King Kone some of the best hot dogs anywhere around. Love that place as well. Plus might as well throw in Red Flower for Chinese. Hands down best Chinese anywhere around that I know of.

    JI Burton vs Chilhowie

JIB has a good QB that can get the ball out. Good protection as well. The RB/FB/LB, #34, is good on O as well as D. They may play the Warriors tough for a quarter or two, but I don't see this being closed by the end of the game. 35-14 Chilhowie

  12. The poll thread saga got me to thinking. Hypothetically, if Bluefield played Greeneville(TN), what would that game look like in your all's mind? Are there any other "dream" matchups for us fans you all can think of that we may never or wait a really long time to see?

  13. In West Virginia, kids are limited to 50 regular season quarters per season and no more than four quarters on a given day. Overtime is considered an extension of the fourth quarter. My guess is the rule is pretty much the same in each state.

  14. I think they are limited to 4 full quarters per week. So, they could do 3 quarters of a JV game and 1 quarter on Friday. Or if they don't have a JV game that week, could do all 4 on Friday.

  19. This is a bellwether game for Graham, and I think we’ll learn more about Graham in this game than we did against Bluefield. Tazewell is talented, but young. Tazewell plays hard for 48 minutes. I would like to see Graham come out and exert dominance, especially with the degree of difficulty lowered from last week. If we see the litany of missed assignments on the line, and the lack of imaginative play-calling we saw last week, this could be dicey. Graham should win, but Tazewell could conceivably pull an upset.

  20. Zone blocking schemes in a power running game are one thing. Dixon is better at coaching the OL than anyone in our area. He's been doing that for years. Seeing Galax throw the football 52 times to 13 different receivers in two games (counting benefit against Floyd) is a dynamic shift in philosophy for a Mark Dixon coached team. Multiple formations with very little of the single power back set we're used to seeing from Galax. Those who know me on this site, know i'm not prone to hyperbole. I'm very much a realist who has been saying Galax needs to be more balanced for a number of years now. With that said, this Galax team is deeper and more talented than any I can remember Dixon having with speed and athleticism in spades. Couple that with two very gifted QB's and a shift in offensive philosophy to get the ball in the hands of that speed in the open field, it could be a special season. I'm more excited to see this season play out than any in recent memory.

No. I think he's a great asset on defense, but I would be absolutely shocked if he were a successful head coach at Gate City.

Agree. Then Reed returns the favor when he takes over as head coach in 1-2 years.
