  5. Has nothing to do with that and everything to do with the fact that Bluefield IS in the board’s area, and they ARE the best team in this area without a doubt. I get you don’t care about Bluefield. I don’t reallly care about Pulaski. But I still include them because they are a part of the polling area.

Vote for the Week 2 Top 10

He did the same thing last week and said something to the effect of “if we’re including Bluefield why don’t we include Tennessee teams” it’s not an oversight at this point, it’s just a spiteful misuse of a vote

  7. Having seen two polls come through that have not ranked Bluefield, do those polls actually count for tabulation purposes? I would argue that they shouldn't. It would be like an AP pollster omitting Alabama.

  8. Graham played the latter two in my time there. Graham’s 1999 team (8-2) doubled up Tennessee High at home (40-20), and Graham’s 2000 team (5-6) lost to Tennessee High in Bristol (by 3). Graham’s 2001 team clobbered Greeneville at Mitchell Stadium (40-7), and Graham’s 2002 team (8-2) lost to Greeneville in Greeneville (by 2). Graham also played Elizabethton twice (1999 - away, 40-20 loss; 2000 - home, 26-20 loss). On behalf of G-Men faithful everywhere, I apologize for our 2-4 mark against NETN schools in my time there, though 3 of the losses were by 1 score). Historically, good teams from SWVA have been competitive with good teams from NETN when given the chance. The problem, I think, is that many of the schools who would schedule NETN schools by geography (see: Washington County/Bristol, Scott County schools not named Gate City, Lee County) have been historically anywhere between decent and dreadful, and it’s easy pickin’s for NETN.

  10. This is a bellwether game for Graham, and I think we’ll learn more about Graham in this game than we did against Bluefield. Tazewell is talented, but young. Tazewell plays hard for 48 minutes. I would like to see Graham come out and exert dominance, especially with the degree of difficulty lowered from last week. If we see the litany of missed assignments on the line, and the lack of imaginative play-calling we saw last week, this could be dicey. Graham should win, but Tazewell could conceivably pull an upset.

  11. Graham could be their own worst enemy in this one, especially if they play flat and underestimate those pesky Dawgs. The fact that Tazewell never gives up until the final buzzer says a lot, and if Graham commits to many self inflicted turn-overs this could get interesting. I know Graham should win this one on paper, but i'm pulling for the Dawgs in an upset.

  12. People never cease to amaze. When confronted with something is clearly illogical and irrational, a person has three basic choices: (1) Admit error and correct. (2) Say nothing / disengage. (3) Dig in / double down / fight. Outside the internet, people choose options #1 and #2 a vast majority of the time. On most online forums, #2 is the prevailing option, with some #3 and a touch of #1 sprinkled in. On this forum, people choose #3 about 90% of the time, and it strikes me peculiar. Be it the Hurley fans from 2016, the whole Chilhowie/Riverheads brouhaha from last year, or even something like this, it’s astounding to me how much like dentistry it is to just get a simple mea culpa out of folks.

  13. Why is it TN teams are always just thought of as coverage area teams? Heck, let's add eastern KY and western NC. Teams from those states are closer to some than TN teams. Forum title says SWVA Sports....as Ryan says, southwest VA and southern WV.

114-84-2....against who? West Greene? Hancock? Volunteer? The Sullivan Co teams? SWVA teams don’t play DB. They don’t play Science Hill. They don’t play Tenn. High. They don’t play Greeneville. A lot of those wins are against the smallest and weakest NETN has to offer. That would be like NETN being proud they’re beating Rye Cove, Hurley, Twin Springs, Thomas a Walker etc.

  18. Speed and strentgh may be keys, union has the speed of Jenkins, who won state in track this past year, and Polier is a absolute brute. Hes the equivalent of JJ Watt in high school. Ok i may be stretching that a bit, but Im just ready to see another shootout at Ernie. I refuse to make a prediction on this one. Good luck to both teams, this is a well respected matchup not only between the players but the fanbase as well.

  21. Zone blocking schemes in a power running game are one thing. Dixon is better at coaching the OL than anyone in our area. He's been doing that for years. Seeing Galax throw the football 52 times to 13 different receivers in two games (counting benefit against Floyd) is a dynamic shift in philosophy for a Mark Dixon coached team. Multiple formations with very little of the single power back set we're used to seeing from Galax. Those who know me on this site, know i'm not prone to hyperbole. I'm very much a realist who has been saying Galax needs to be more balanced for a number of years now. With that said, this Galax team is deeper and more talented than any I can remember Dixon having with speed and athleticism in spades. Couple that with two very gifted QB's and a shift in offensive philosophy to get the ball in the hands of that speed in the open field, it could be a special season. I'm more excited to see this season play out than any in recent memory.

    Graham vs Tazewell

Depends on how the game starts off. If Tazewell takes care of their assignments, wraps up the tackles missed, and doesn't make costly mistakes then this is a game. I do think that Graham will take it because of experience and size on the lines but don't expect the Dogs to just let them run over them without a fight.

  36. I think everyone realizes you disagree. I was at the Graham/Bluefield game. Bluefield is probably better than the two teams that end up playing for 2A championship in VA. I'm by no means an expert or even a veteran member of this forum but I understand coverage area and know a high caliber team when I see one. Bluefield is superior to any other teams around here.

  37. No, that particular one admitted it was an intentional omission. Hence why I believe that there should be a threshold for these things, especially since Coalfield Sports is using it. Legitimacy and all. Reddit’s CFB and CBB polls work that way. If you’re continuously doing ridiculous things, like not voting for an obvious Top 25 team on multiple occasions because of some petty slight, you have your vote revoked.

  38. I like this post, I'll definitely be following the Hoos a little closer this year to see how things go, I am a fan of their defensive scheme for sure.

  39. I was willing to chalk it up to an oversight, but are you saying that you intentionally omitted Bluefield? If legitimately think that Bluefield is not one of the top 10 teams in SWVA, you know nothing about high school football in SWVA, and should have your poll disqualified. Bluefield hung 31 in the first half on your #5 team, BTW.

    2019 Union Graham

GC was 4-1 against TN High but they are currently 1-8 vs Sullivan South. That's just the most recent not counting Sullivan Central which they were 3-1.(Courtesy of fourseasonsfootball.com) SWVA teams may be able to compete every few years but realistically the top teams in SWVA aren't going to dominate the top NETN. I get that the best Union team may have a chance but not on a yearly basis. You play DB or Science Hill every year and it won't be a winning record.

  41. I was just putting in my two cents. Just because it has been close in recent years doesn’t mean it will be close this year. Who knows what we will see, that’s why we play games every year. And @Union_Fan is correct, I meant the Union O was consistent & ate up clock with long drives. I just think this Richlands team will dial up big plays on offense and will get a few stops on D Friday night. I’m just happy Football is back in SWVA! Good luck & good health to both teams -

  44. I don't know if another state title appearance is in cards for Chilhowie, but they look the part of a deep run 1A team. A big key is that their big guys are athletic, and while they've got some weaknesses, it will be a long time before they run into a 1A team that can exploit them. The most dangerous part though is their depth. If they can out-rotate a 2A school and leave them standing with their hands on their knees, there's not much more you can ask for. It was a pretty good game for three and a half quarters, and then the lack of experience and leadership from Marion's corp started to show through. They seemed to get tired and emotionally deflated after going down by a couple of scores and things kind of escalated on them. Marion's not a bad team, but they're not world beaters, and in what appears to be VERY deep SWD, they may get lost in the shuffle, but they'll get better as the season progresses. But hey, no coaches got ejected and Robinson and Carroll didn't punch each other, so I consider the game a success based on where it seemed like it was going in the first half.

  45. Sure thing. Here’s my short pitch: Being a Virginia fan is more than about following an athletic team. It’s about embracing the culture. It’s a culture that values the student-athlete, with each side of that hyphen meaning just as much as the other. Virginia does not tolerate criminal activity or those who reflect poorly on the program. Mike London might have been a poor football coach, but he did well at training men who are solid members of the community. In many places, that would lead to borderline riot. At Virginia, though we demand better performance, we respect the work he did in those players’ lives. Bronco Mendenhall turns boys into men in a similar fashion (with greater coaching acumen). Our fans may not outnumber fans from larger state schools (such as the one nearest us), but they are devoted, dedicated, and more realistic than most others. As far as football, we are 3 years into a 5-year rebuild. Mendenhall’s OC is Robert Anae, who runs an offense with Mike Leach “air raid” principles. Problem is, our OL hasn’t been able to hold the blocks to execute it regularly. When it does, you get this: And now, we have speedy JUCO transfer Bryce Perkins behind center to execute some option styles (with an improved OL). Interesting and exciting times ahead. On defense, Mendenhall runs 3-4 and 3-3-5 bases with exotic blitzes. UVA’s Pass D was 7th in the country last year. However, the DL was 2-3 years away from being as he wants, so the Rush D was 101st. The back 7 is promising this year, and is one of the best in the ACC. The DL is equally as porous as last year, that is, should Ohio State transfer Dylan Thompson not be as advertised. We’re marching back to respectability, and I hope you join the ride!
