  1. You need only to look at Bluefield, Graham, Union, Chilhowie, Galax, and Narrows to get your finalists for this award...

  2. Rhodes (if I am spelling that right) D Coordinator for Union. If it weren't for the Bears D they wouldn't be where they are today. Union's D has led the charge through a transition from a spread o to a wildcat/wing t o. They wouldn't be undefeated if it weren't for that tough a$$ d.

  4. I'd at least invite you to Applebee's to finish watching the game. Not to eat though, because trust me, you don't want to eat at the applebees in Bluefield.

  5. Nobody in the locker room is taking them lightly, I can promise you that. They know they have the chance to prove they are the best team in the region on Saturday afternoon. They know how talented Graham is. Back on topic, I think Grahams coach has to be in there. The #2 seed and 9-1 on the year with the only loss on that fumble at the one yard line.

  6. I've certainly been impressed this season with Coach Travis Turner and the Bears after Bailey Turner's injury. I think it speaks volumes that Union scored 49 against my Canes without throwing a pass or James Mitchell scoring. The Bears have finally found an effective offense after losing #16, while proving they're more than a one-man team. The speedy G-Men have been impressive all season, while the Bears have worked for two months to overcome adversity. I think the G-Men win this game in September or October on any field. But it's November at Bullitt, which should bode well for the Bears.

  7. I'd rather pay more and actually have signal lol. My cousin had Sprint and didn't have signal in half of the places she went in Richlands. I saw that first hand. I've been with Verizon since 08. No need to run back now since it works well.

  8. Based on this alone I give it to Union in a good margin. If Graham can keep it clean and play hard with their heads in the game and their attitudes in check, then look for a tight one that they might just possibly pull it out. This pains me to say but go G-Men!

  9. In a game like this I still think it come down to the old saying... turnovers and penalties. The winner of this battle wins. These are the games I love. Two great teams playing for the right to move on and represent SWVA.

  10. I agree. The winner of this game should get it. Both Turner and Palmer are deserving. Both have done a great job in my view.

    Head Coach?

You wonder why people dislike Great city but Hurley is a better job than there.

  12. Nick Johnson can join this club, 2-8 to 6-4 with a playoff birth at TWHS.

  13. Crist has to be in the discussion from 3-7 to 7-3 is a pretty big turnaround

  14. Get a real carrier! lol VZ had pretty good coverage down there when I was there. More expensive I know but you do get what you pay for...

  15. Plus the fact that the players never gave up and played hard until the end. They could have just as easily rolled over and not had anything to show for.

  16. ANY of the coaches in the above would be deserving, you can look at RIDGEVIEW and say MULLINS deserves it, or we could wait and see how the playoffs pan out.IF Union or Graham makes it to the title game at SALEM that coach should get the nod, as well as ADAMS at BURTON if they make it

  17. In my humble opinion, Tom Turner was the best coach ever in the Lonesome Pine. I'm sure he taught Travis well.

  18. I stand corrected. Can’t say I don’t love your thought process on this. Tom it is!

  19. In my opinion I think a coach of the year award should be awarded to a coach with a great record who led their team to "overachieve." We all expect Bluefield, Union, Galax, & Graham to win 8, 9, or 10 games. What most didn't expect this year was Marion start out 8-0, Ridgeview host a playoff game at 9-1, or Narrows to have home field advantage throughout the state title game. Carroll from Marion, Mullins from Ridgeview and Lowe from Narrows would be my top 3. But I'd give my vote to Kelly Lowe at Narrows. They lost a player that went to play at VT and still went 9-1 and locked up home field throughout.

  20. Maybe:But , in my opinion the difference will be coaching decisions at crucial times: EDGE UNION

  21. I'm not a person who watches ballgames in a crowd, or with people haha. I tend to let the ebbs and flows of a game get me, to put it kindly, riled up. HS games, these are 14-18 year old kids and their parents, who knows what you'll get one week to the next? But a game like Alabama at Auburn? That's serious business ha. Im being overly ridiculous but I really do watch games alone. That's my superstition.

  22. One could mention Tazewells head coach. They didn’t have a record year by any means, but with the ridiculous youth they had and the injuries they sustained on top of that, I don’t know that any of the aforementioned coaches could’ve done a better job. This is obviously a far fetched reach, but not unreasonable in my opinion.

2017 SWVA Coach of the Year

McDowell too. But speaking of coaching, Mount View has a good young coach (around 28-29 years old) in my opinion. His name is Larry Thompson. He's originally from Louisiana but after Katrina moved around and ended up playing in college at Concord, then somehow ended up in Welch. Not saying he deserves a coach of the year award but he's got Mount View competitive in most games which was unheard of in the years before he took over.

  24. For their sake, I hope they give Graham their due reverence. I’m 99.99% sure that’s the message Turner is instilling in his boys, but if this board is any indication, there are people looking ahead to Appomattox a bit prematurely.

  25. Throw Narrows coach in there. For a school that's not known for a great football program, they've had a good season and good shot at beating Galax. So hats off to Narrows coaching staff & players!

  26. He’s a coach in this mesage boards jurisdiction. Monroe and Mercer counties in WV are part of this. My vote would be either Turner or Simon. Hands down.

  27. I am worried about this game. Not because Union will come out flat. Heck they may still do so. I am worried because Graham is likely the best team our Bears have faced to that point. And it will not get any easier. I still think the Bears win. However I am going to adjust my pick just a little bit. Union 35, Graham 28. The difference? This game is at Bullitt Park.

  28. Fred Simon hands down! 4-6 last year 12-0 this year.

  30. I'm assuming it's a 3:30 CBS kick, you may can find it driving home on radio. I'll be back home, warm and watching by the half I assume, next time beat Bluefield and we would have to come up there and I'd be the one bitchin haha

  32. Helluva game last night. Greeneville got down 21-0 but rallied for a 35-31 win. Cade Ballard was 17-21 for 304 yards, but the star of the game was a cornerback who had 4 sensational interceptions, two of which were in the end zone, one of which was on a long pass where he ripped the football away from the receiver's hand in mid-air, and one which was the game clincher. Glad Union - Graham is on Saturday, as it'll free us up for either Marshall Co at Greeneville, Oakland at Maryville, Red Bank at Alcoa, Gaffney at Dorman in Spartanburg, or South Iredell at AC Reynolds in Asheville.

  33. That's not true at all. Union only went to the T inside the 10 yard line. The OL was pushing Marion around out of shotgun with the counters and sweeps.

  34. Harlan County with a turnaround season over in KY. Started off 1-4 and finished the reg. season at 5-5. Win last night put them in the 5A semifinals. http://www.harlandaily.com/2017/11/17/bears-capture-region-4-championship/
