  1. Based on what I saw yesterday in Saltville, Chilhowie can absolutely beat Riverheads. That is NOT the same team that beat Galax last season! Best of luck to Chilhowie. Bring that state title back to our side of the state!

    Chilhowie Field

So, I know that this is after the fact and kind of irrelevant, but let's address the real reason why the game was played at Northwood and not Emory. Chilhowie's field was deemed to be unsuitable for playing on, but let's be honest with ourselves, Northwood's field wasn't going to be any better. While Marion's field was in rough shape at the end of the season due to hosting back to back games in November rain, it has good grass and would have been in good condition to play on. Patrick Henry has a very large natural grass stadium, and GW would have been an ideal "midway" point between the two schools. But they went with Northwood, after a delegate intervened, which tells you the real motivation behind the move to Saltville. Saltville has NOTHING. Two analog gas stations that were rendered useless by their proximity to the stadium, a Subway, a Chinese restaurant, and a drive-in restaurant that is off the beaten path into town. Chilhowie had a Christmas parade that morning and was expecting to host the biggest non-Smyth-rivalry game that they had hosted since the 70s. To the Chilhowie tourism department this was a second Apple Festival, and if they couldn't host the game, at least several hundred (at worst) people would have to get off I-81 in Chilhowie, drive directly past their Hardees, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Food City, and three gas stations before leaving the corporate limit north to Saltville, where a person would inevitably be out of options for gas, lunch, etc. Not to say that folks hearts weren't in the right place by wanting Chilhowie to have the right to host it, but moving the game to Northwood was strictly based on local economics. It keeps the revenue in Chilhowie rather than Glade and Washington County.

    Weather this weekend

weatherunderground.com is showing 5 to 8 inches of snow in Salem Saturday and 1 to 3 inches Sunday Be interesting to see how the VHSL screws this up. Reckon they'll force the games into a dome somewhere?

  14. Watched a little bit of film on Goochland. What I was able to see they basically run the ball 99% of the time. Kind of a "here comes stop it if you can" style offense. Is that the consensus of what ya'll have seen?

  15. Galax may not have played their best game yesterday or was good yesterday although anyone who watched the game will tell you they have talent. Their D line was very, very good. If anything yesterday shows you Chilhowie is legit. In 5 out of 5 games are they 3 TDs better than Galax-No. Although Chilhowie is not a fluke, good enough to beat Riverheads? We will see. But to say that Galax is not Good shows you are either trolling or do not know football.

  16. Back in the early 80's, people in the area (me included) thought after Appalachia thumped Fieldale-Collinsville that the Dawgs beating Central for the state title would be a formality. That was the last time I ever took a game for granted without having seen both teams play.

    Chilhowie Field

The late venue change ensured no group had time to set-up concessions. VHSL no-reentry ensured the neighboring convenience station wouldn't benefit. The big winner: CHS Cheerleaders. Their 50-50 pot was $3186.

  20. Chilhowie was tested yesterday, and passed. The score might not show that, but Galax did not take it laying down.

  21. I don't think you can unless you want to miss a lot of school. I would suggest one of the games at Salem and one at Vinton at William Byrd.

  22. Chilhowie returned 20 starters from last years team. And this years team is 10x better than the one they had last year. This will be a close game, and I think it could finally be the Warriors time.

  23. All in good natured fun my friend...not even you can be right 100% of the time but you're pretty accurate a lot of the time so I still give you high marks. Now, go GMen and bring that 2A title back to SWVA!

  24. I actually think this is the year for Chilhowie. Can Riverheads throw? Cause there hasn’t been a team who can run the ball with consistency against the Warriors. I’ll be headed up to watch this one for sure.

  25. This thread sorta got lost in the change of venue controversy, but Chilhowie deserves a big CONGRATULATIONS on a huge victory today. Stay focused and keep playing hard, you have a date with destiny next week. Bring it home!

  26. In sure they'll have someone inspect the field on Tuesday and say it's good to go. On Friday some delegate will get a burr under his saddle and the field will be inspected a second time. At that point we'll decide to move the game to who knows where. But I'm sure it will be the best location for all involved.

  28. I know buddy ... Graham got popped for at least two "too much time" penalties. Not having that play clock ... especially in state semis ... is as you said perfectly "strange and ridiculous."

  32. First off, CONGRATS to Graham for the phenomenal win today. Now, all Graham has to do is keep playing their game and they will be champions this time next week.

  34. I made the trip to Salem to watch Graham against Radford and if they come out with that Intensity and play good smart football it will be hard to beat them. They were absolutely laying licks.

  35. I say when the final buzzer sounds, the Gmen will be shining like a diamond in a goats ass! Goochland will make a game if it first a quarter or so.....then the flood gates break free. Cam will go off and the State Title will reside again in SWVA. Good luck fellas. Hope you saved some room for dessert after that trouncing of Radford. Gmen 42 Gooches 21

  36. Graham came out ready to play today. They certainly didn't look like they were playing for 2nd place, oh wait, East Rock lost. GMen will be ready again next week. It should be a close one but I'm taking Graham for the win. Their defense is lights out! Offense worked well today and was patient. Took 6 minutes for first TD and that was great! They played smart & hard. I see them playing smart and hard next week and able to make adjustments when needed.

  37. I got Graham by 3 points. I was way overly confident the last time the GMen plyed for the title and it felt like a given Graham would beat Harrisonburg after the Liberty beatdown. We had incredible athletes all over the field and it kind of feels a bit like back then with the athletes, big offense, and explosive semifinals performance. Therefore, I learned my lesson years ago. What is different from back then is./was.......Harrisonburg was 7-3 in regular season unlike Goochland this year, and Goochland has won 2 titles in the last 12-13 years so this upcoming game kind of has the feel of a tossup game

The sentiment from that post in 2017 still rings true. With Dixon’s leadership and strength and conditioning program, Galax has enough talent to win Region 1C four out of every five years. Especially with Region 1C being as weak as it’s been lately. Let’s examine how Galax has ended several seasons under Dixon. 2012 - loss to Honaker 2013 - loss to Haysi 2014 - loss to Haysi 2016 - loss to Riverheads in state semis. 2017 - loss to Chilhowie state semis 2018 - loss to Chilhowie state semis Im not real popular around town because I’m very much a realist. Galax is the class of region 1C. But that doesn’t guarantee them a trip to Salem. It’s hard to get there, especially out of arguably the weakest region in Class 1. Galax’s success over the years is something to be proud of. But calling a spade a spade makes me a “hater”!
