  1. Also, was very happy to see our boys have the NS stickers on their helmets, our coaches had the NS on their polos and the cheerleaders had purple ribbons in their hair. Byrd lost a senior girl, Nala Saunders, on Wednesday morning suddenly and purple was her favorite color. So I was really happy to see us honor her last night. Also, I thought it was very classy for the Blues to get to the 2 yard line with 1 minute left and Byrd only having one timeout and instead and scoring and going up 13, we took a knee at the 2 to leave it a 6 point win. Felt like that was a good move, especially given the fact that Byrd was playing for NS.

  2. Folks in and around the community of Chilhowie are still in a state of shock and disbelief in the sudden loss of their former WARRIOR, Will Walker. Will was killed in a farm accident late Thursday evening near Chilhowie. Will was a outstanding running back several years ago at CHS. He was 30 years old, and a AG teacher at Chilhowie and Northwood. Will was a great person, a great husband, and a brand new dad. We ask why Lord? Only our Father in Heaven knows the answer as to why. But we can be assured that Will is with Our Holy Father now. Will won the race to get to Heaven before we did. God knows what he is doing, and he knows why. Life on this Earth throws us a curve ball from time to time, and we have to accept his actions and keep the Faith, knowing that we will all be reunited in Heaven with Will and the others that have passed before us. Please Pray for Will's family and friends. Prayer is what we all need to help comfort our loss. May OUR Lord be with us now and in the days to come. May God Bless us all.

I'm sorry, but football is just a sport, it's not everything. I have issues with school systems that give athletics too much importance. I love sports, don't get me wrong but it shouldn't drive academics. In Gate City's case, it sounds like a mess, which is sad. That being said you have a group of kids who seem stronger in other sports, it happens. Your state basketball title speaks for that. Eventually you will get another group of good football players. Even though it's tough to see, Gate City has had it's fair share and then some of success in football. Most schools would dream to have your legacy, be thankful that you have that history.

  5. As a teacher, you don't just consolidate just because of bad football. Scott county still ranks in the top 20 as far as test scores in the state. Sports are important, but they should never drive consolidation, economics and the potential to offer better academics for all students should. It's all a cycle, eventually the football teams in Scott county will improve. Until then support your kids, they deserve it.

Never say never...but be careful what you wish for... The only issue is, if all Scott Co. schools consolidated, you would have over 1100 students in one school...talk about being non-competitive, you wouldn't stand a chance with the schools in the Roanoke Valley...

  11. What was the score? Guys No one from PH comes on here and talks about them being a powerhouse. You guys took pot shots at them and they won big. Maybe they can keep it up just don't compare them to Chilhowie because right now they are a whole other level than the single a teams around here. Chilhowie that is

  14. Let me start by saying that mine and my family’s thoughts and prayers are with the entire Chilhowie community over the recent, tragic news of the loss of one of their own. On a much less important note, there is a high profile football game to be played on Friday night. Last year’s game saw the Bearcats give the Warriors their worst loss of the regular season. Both teams return a high number of players from that game and are a combined 8-1 this year. Emotions will run high for a number of reasons Friday night. I expect a hard fought game from both teams. I feel the Bearcats have what most 1A programs don’t have, to allow them to match up with Chilhowie; speed. I see this game being close through 3 quarters, but I believe the power aspect of the VHS running game will eventually take its toll on the Warriors. VHS - 34 Chilhowie - 19 Good luck to the Chilhowie players and God be with the entire community thru this difficult time.

The lack of good infrastructure across the county is the one major hindrance to a one school system in Scott County. I could see one school being shut down in the near future and folded into two others IF anything happened.

I didn't see as much T-formation as I saw triple option plays. Lotta option from GC last night. GC was overmatched talent wise but the kids played hard all night. I know Akers has been a disaster but it is a credit to him, the assistants and the kids that they played their hardest every minute last night. It did extend the game and make the last four minutes last FOREVER lol but the kids deserve a chance to play as hard as they can til the end. does anyone know Turners stat line? He was very good last night. I am curious to his completions and attempts, he didn't put up 400 yards or anything but I'm not sure he missed more than 1-2 passes if any.

  24. Man what a fun game to watch. Both teams would march down the field and score at will and then go cold for long stretches. But it seemed like each time Byrd scored, Richlands answered. I kept telling the wife that if we could get ahead there at the end Byrd would have to start passing and we’d be able to pull it out. Their QB Dantzler is an amazing athlete, but he is a far superior runner. Really proud of the Blues to take this game. Horn comes back (not even close to 100%) and has a 7 catch, 184 yard and 3 TD performance. Forrrst with two 4th quarter FG including a 48 yarder that ties R. Strong for the longest in school history. MAJOR points haul right there. If they Blues were to win out after Bluefield (Big if), they would be 7-3 and have some nice wins and maybe be a top 4 seed. But there’s a lot of ball to play. Either way, proud of the boys. On to the buzzsaw that is Bluefield....

Matthew Gibson #52 from Rye Cove unofficially had 21 tackles tonight in the loss to Castlewood. Great game, it’s just rough on these smaller schools that have very few numbers and about every kid on the team is on the field for the full 48 minutes.

Union's offense seemed really simple. Same plays over and over but GC could not stop them. Score was much closer than the game. I was surprised to see GC throw some T in the play calling. Moved the ball much better than I thought they would on Union's defense until they would eventually stall or turn it over.

Not a big fan of this move. Opens up a can of worms for other schools to move down so they can beat schools that have 200 less students than they do.
