  1. I totally retract this statement... when I posted this, I wanted him to be out a couple of games not really hurt per se... but just kept out as a precautionary measure since Union shouldn't have any problems beating us without him. Prayers for Bailey, Travis and the whole Turner family.

The fact you have Narrows 5th shows all we need to know, honestly. And that's no slight to any Narrows fans on here.

  6. This was a pretty competitive game last year until GW put it away in the fourth. Marion seems to have taken a step forward in talent, whereas GW may not be where they were at this time last year. Make no mistake, that Fort Chiswell loss only motivated the 'Roons, and both teams should be ready to play this week. Thoughts? Predictions? Comments about field conditions?

  7. Here is the first episode of the podcast! I did as best I could without any cohost or guest. Looking forward to having weekly guests from this point on to help spice it up and whatnot. Let me know what you like, don't like, any ideas for segments or guests you may have. It's all fair game. Enjoy! https://m.soundcloud.com/swvasportspod/swva-sports-pod-s1e1-week-1

You can go ahead and ban me too, and I won't even mention the high school on Prices Fork Rd. It seems to me all but one of those posts were sincere. It's mostly probable that the sincere ones didn't know that the forbidden named school wasn't in the SWVA.com area. I know rules are necessary for any successful entity, and I respect that, but "the hammer," and "try me," I can get at work, and are the opposite of why I participate in this site...to talk about and read about something fun, sports, with others who share the same interest. Good day sir.

I tend to agree with this from what I have seen so far. Based off just the first couple of games I would also have Narrows, Giles, and Va High all knocking on the door waiting for someone to slip.

Without turnovers the last two games would have been much closer with even a chance to have won one of them.

    Tazewell @ River View

If you remember the old John Boy 's drive thru they just opened one of those back up and they call it the Owl, it is as you are leaving War beside the old service station. They make a good Cheeseburger and fries, suppose to stay open till 7. Belongs to the Jones who own the hardware store, their daughter was a tennis coach for VT, pretty sure she made it into Tech coaching hall of fame, or something like that, some really good people.

  23. With his running ability it makes the offense more dynamic. I remember when he was young he could really toss the pig skin but we will see. I really hope qualls get to play QB until Bailey returns.

The brakes need pumped big time wrt/ Narrows. I've seen several posters on multiple boards have them in top 10's and a couple top 5's. Let's see what they do against Giles. That's the only true barometer this team faces before getting into district play. Honestly, I think they have the potential to be better than last year on D just due to the strength and size on the line. Offensively, tighten up on the ball security and become a little more balanced and they're on to something. Still thinking 8-2 or 7-3 at the end of the season. We will see.

    South @ Gate City

    1) GC must eliminate turnovers 2) GC play calling must improve 3) GC must score If GC can do those 3 things they might be able to compete. South's QB Ethan Ward will probably control the game, he's led SS to 114 points this season, GC has scored 13. If we cannot hold them, we do not have the offense to keep up. Crucify me if you wish, just speaking the truth. We had more turnovers vs Graham, Richlands, and Abingdon than we had points. Let that sink in for a minute.

  28. Central fans know this too well. Hit Williams in backfield and both knees went down. 2 secs later he leans over goal line and they give it to him and they win in OT

    Giles @ Graham

I agree winger, Beidleman and Ratcliffe need to be in the back field. I'm sure Willams and staff will realize that and make the change.

  33. Congrats to Union they played a very good game last night! Richlands defense played a very good game but they can't be out on the field 80% of game. They are going to have to get something figured out on offense! #2 is going to have to just hit he's short routes and work the ball down the field as far as running the ball I seen some good runs from both rb's but if I was Mance I would go to T or power I and run it right down the field! I thought they was going to use #72, 45 & 44 some at rb last night would've been the night to do it! Richlands just put it behind you and get ready for Blacksburg in 2wks!!

    Union and Richlands

Random thoughts: * I was a little bummed that this didn't come down to the final play, but I guess that had to end sometime. Still a good game though. * Good crowd, but not as big as I thought it would be. Uncertain weather may have had something to do with that. *Thankful that the weather held out for the most part. On the way over from Kingsport it rained pretty hard a couple of times. *Thought at the half that Union was going to win unless they imploded with turnovers. They really just dominated both sides of the LOS, and probably should have been up 2-3 TD at the half. *Really surprised Richlands had so much difficulty moving the football, especially on the ground. *Also surprised that Richlands punted to Mitchell after angling their first punt out of bounds. I have no idea why any opponent would ever willingly put the football in his hands. *Didn't understand why Mance didn't go for 2 after the TD. The way Union was grinding the football, possessions were going to be limited.

    Union and Richlands

I said over on Preps that Richlands didn't look what they "should have" in many fans view, and GC is improved, certainly beyond what I thought they were.

    Graham vs Tazewell

What I want to see and continue to see every week is for Tazewell to be able to control the line on offense more. Give time to setup the pass instead of the QB running for his life. Defensively Keep things sharp work on QB containment. Also some points score would be nice. Also on another note I would like to see Graham come out and be respectful and limit their trash talking although that may be asking for to much...

  39. " (5) Richlands. I'm just putting Ernie Hicks here just to piss people off. I really don't think Ernie Hicks is that bad, especially since the mountain running down the center of the field has been leveled, but it's my list and I say Richlands is 5th worst. Prove me wrong. :) " This is one Blues fan you wont piss off about it. I love Ernie because of the history and atmosphere, and it is home, but it does need some work and updating...........especially the bathrooms and the visitor side seating. I doubt there is much can be done for the seating because of the road behind it, but a couple of port-a-potties would help and a concession stand of some sort.............and maybe a speaker or 2 would help also. I sat over there a couple of years ago with my wife during one of the Richlands vs honaker games and got a whole new perspective on a game at Ernie. It's great on the home side, but not so much on the visitor side. Of course that can be said about 90% of the high school stadiums I've been too !

  40. Unlike the list regarding the "best" places, this list is lengthy and cumbersome. (1) Mount View. Never have I seen a crowd shower an opposing marching band with beer bottles, beer cans, and tins of snuff. And the dilapidated bleachers built onto an unsteady rock face are a sheer hazard, no matter how one looks at it. The field was never adequately cut, especially if your team was faster than Mount View. And after about 2 quarters, those poop brown and baby turd yellow uniforms are a visual nuisance. Just an absymal setting, and this comes from a fan whose team slaughtered Mount View. (2) Carroll County. Worst field ever. The number of injury timeouts I've seen for sprained ankles on Tommy Thompson field is staggering. I sure hope it's improved in the last 8 years. (3) Grayson County. Second worst field ever, but also the second worst bleachers ever, so it's a real lose/lose. You can tell the administration, on a county and school level, have little pride in that facility. (4) Pocahontas. The setting for their old stadium was absolutely gorgeous, in that clearing in a grove. But the grass was never less than 8" high, and the bleachers were something out of a Stephen King novel. It's a shame that such a beautiful backdrop was so poorly maintained. I really wanted to like that place, but couldn't. (5) Richlands. I'm just putting Ernie Hicks here just to piss people off. I really don't think Ernie Hicks is that bad, especially since the mountain running down the center of the field has been leveled, but it's my list and I say Richlands is 5th worst. Prove me wrong. :)
