  4. The location of Central makes sense when you consider that Eastside wont last long. The enrollment of the school (and county as a whole is dropping) it will close in the near future. Looking back Coeburn and St Paul should have been folded into Central when consolidation initially took place and saved the county $. Personally I believe the reason it wasn't was to prevent Central from moving up to 3A, which under VHSL rules at the time would have been a disaster Centrals colors make sense to me - Pound was Black/Red, JJK was Red/Black what's wrong with keeping those colors? Eastside got the short end of the stick but they also represent a smaller portion of the counties students. Coeburn really got screwed in the deal; lost their school name and mascot, and almost no students came from St Paul(unsurprisingly). Union actually did a great job embracing consolidation, from coming up with a school name that's unique and doing so early, to picking a mascot and colors on their own(student body made the choice I believe). Well done all around.

  6. Does anyone know where trueblue and tbgfan went? I haven't seen any posting from them in awhile. I really miss what they did on Friday nights. They both done a lot of work on keeping us updated on most of the games. Just wondered if anyone knew. I hope they come back soon. You two did a GREAT job and are missed by this High School Football fan

  7. I can't say that the 2004 Bluefield team wouldn't defeat the 2006 Richlands team, but I do know that they squeezed out a 3 point win over Mount View (6-4), and would have lost to Weir ... had the Weir coach simply kept the ball on the ground with a 2 score lead and under 2 minutes to go. The idea that the Bluefield team would "murder and then feast" on that Richlands team is absurd.

  8. Furthermore, their two losses were by 2 and 1 point(s), meaning they're a few plays shy of a 7-0 record I can't help but think that if Sensabaugh was white, this wouldn't be an issue with the well-to-do folks in Washington County, TN...

  11. This one gets me. Wasn’t the land wcs bought from the craphole of norton the same land the county annexed them a few years earlier so they could build the new Walmart and still say it was in norton? I hate norton. More than anywhere else. Goes back to kuzco and the gates of hell comment in 91 and the brawl on the field in 90. But back to the subject, wasn’t this the same land. Stupid location to put central. Should have built it at the flea market site and had diff colors and mascot as well. Wise co failed at this consolidation.

  12. Was a part of every State Team from 05-10 05 Was a good learning experience for both coaches and players 06 The talent got better from the year before and some players stepped up in big ways all year 07 Takheim Hedgeman just had a field day 10 Never could find a rhythm or would get out of one due to penalty or botched play I seriously think 10 was the best team (and not just because I played) we had a massive line blocking for someone who didn't need much blocking , Def POY in Will Lowe, a hard hitting linebacker duo with Cody Thomas and Devon Johnson, shutdown secondary with Austin Johnson, Bradley Strong, Jack Vance, Sean Overton, and Al Fajardo that I believe holds the School Record for INTs in a season (I know Bradley at least holds the individual record) and QB battle that any coach would love to be in with Lockhart and Reece Strong battling it out for snaps every practice. As mentioned above it did take a blocked FG to beat an 8-5 RC and came down to basically the last possession in the 10 State Game

  13. Crockett has the unfortunate situation of being in Jonesborough: too many wealthy, well-connected parents who expect to see their kid on the field regardless of talent Same exact problem Abingdon had until Reed came and changed the culture.

  16. My senior year of '04 was a special year. Not saying we were the best but we were a solid team and ran into a very good $#%#& team in the state-semis. I kinda feel we set the table and brought back a little of that culture that had been lost in the late 90's. A few of those kids that were Freshman and Sophmore's that year for us could have gone to many schools right away and started. Speaking of the '04 Beavers, I always wondered what that game that year would have been like. It would have been fun, that's for sure.

  19. Proud of my Tigers for their position 45 playoff games 19 wins 26 losses .422 win percentage For a school that didn't have near the talent of the others on the list and played in D2 almost the entire time while only being marginally larger than Appalachia and significantly smaller than PV (Haysi hovered around 350 students, Appalachia 300 and PV 550). Haysi never had a player play D1 football and few that played college ball at all while the other schools in their success range had significant advantages in raw talent.

I've seen at least 1 Richlands game every year since Timmy Brown was a junior and 2006 was the best team I've personally seen. I'd almost be willing to bet that Caleb Jennings had more touchdowns called back that year than Richlands has scored all of this year.

  25. Sensabaugh is a good guy, in a bad spot. This is his first gig as a head coach and could have shown more maturity and not got into an argument with the school board but he is the type of person who will defend himself. He will be a successful coach because he is a successful person, just maybe not in his current location. I am anxious to see how they handle the situation of all the kids saying they will not play if he is not the coach. This has gotten way ugly.

I was misinformed by my ex(custody of JORDAN)she had told me that he HAD TO GO TO SCHOOL AT THE ALT ED, but in fact it was the best option, based on his multiple needs, so with that being the best fit for our son I will leave it alone, but I do want to thank you for bringing this to light, please accept my thanks.

  27. I know that Wise Co and Norton did a land swap for the Wal-Mart Supercenter site because Wal-Mart wanted to remain in Norton. I am not sure what land Wise Co received, or what the exact boundaries were of each property. Edit: I just found minutes from a Norton council meeting dated Jan 6, 2004 stating that the land swap was 12.2 acres. That would indicate this is not the same land Central is currently on since it was part of 25 acre purchase. I guess it could be half. Just not sure.

  30. I think that is a good idea, too. I enjoyed the last one, and I always enjoyed travelling there as a player back in the day. The place had an aura to it...and the field weeded out the sissies. Only got to do it twice, but I always looked forward to it.

I'd say Akers keeps the job as long as he wants it. No one in GC wants to put pressure on the SB or Superintendent to do the right thing. The level of corruption that the people will tolerate is precisely the level that they will receive.

  33. no school system will ever hire Sensabaugh, I don't know why he would want to put up with it all anyway. Coaching in the 21st century has too much baggage.

  35. Don't sleep on the other linebacker #54 he's everywhere, talented sophomore plays both ways, not as vocal as Vinyard but I'd be surprised if he doesn't lead the team in tackles. The games I have been to he's had multiple forced fumbles. He's a terror on special teams.

  39. In boy's basketball and baseball the answer is definitely no. Both of those coaches have had enough time to build a winning program and it hasn't happened. I thought Owens was the answer in football after he was successful early but the past two years have been bad, injuries or no injuries. Wise's best bet is to ask Robin Dotson to coach every sport they offer.

  40. In Virginia it really hasn't affected the playoffs that much. When the playoffs started in 1970 there were three rounds built into the playoffs. As compared to WV which started playoffs in 1947 but only the top two teams were in the playoffs in WV until 1972. Then only four until 1979 when eight teams were in and then the current system in 1991. WV teams were at a slight disadvantage so far as playoff appearances but only slight because there were not nearly as many schools. the only school that you could say really suffered was Bluefield in the 1960's that had two undefeated teams and three 9-1 teams that did not make the playoffs. Then again there were no playoffs in Virginia at that time and Gate City and Appalachia had some outstanding teams in that decade. Oh yeah, and any school that had to compete against Powell Valley, Appalachia and Gate City for district titles. lol.

  42. I probably think that there is enough money floating around Bluefield to build a stadium worthy of Graham, John Bowerbank would probably help with the turf, and Coke would give you a scoreboard if you serve crisp, refreshing Coca-Cola to all your thirsty patrons. Papa John's would kick in at the concession stand just so you didn't have to eat Pizza Hut pizza. Elizabethton High School should be the model for everyone to follow and if they can build that in Carter County and in Elizabethton they can do it in Bluefield.

Also, I'm still partial to the old Shakers of Saltville which no longer exists of course, but I still pay attention to Northwood because we had a special coach down this way that put in some time up at Worthy High many, many moons ago.
