  1. I watched the hudl highlights of RIDGEVEIW VS CHIHOWIE,and I was very impressed with both squads. Anyone who can go toe to toe with RIDGEVIEW has my respect. CHILHOWIES' depth wins this one 28-21,but VA HIGH gets some good exp. for the upcoming playoffs

Also speaking of support of little league. The GC Junior Devils traveled to Lee yesterday. Lee is supporting their youth teams from top to bottom. Lee High School treats those kids the same as they do the high school team. They inflate the helmet for them to run out of while the cannon blasts. Even after each TD the cannon goes off. The community seems to be behind them all the way as well. It shows as well. The 3 teams they field can easily field 6 teams with the numbers they have. I really enjoyed my trip over to Lee yesterday. That is the support that not only we need at GC but other youth teams need as well.

You are part of the problem in Gate City, Va. constantly out here making up excuses about coaching and how Akers and his staff are a cancer. The. Talent. Is. Not. There. Those kids bust their tails, and so do the coaches, to try and get a win on Friday nights. They don’t give up, which is more than you can say. You’ve given up on your team and town. EH31 is trying to make a point to you, and all you’ve done is make more excuses, and now came at him with a 12 year old’s version of a keyboard warrior threat. Wake up and see that there are about 10 circumstances that have led GC to what it is right now. Mac McClung is 100% near the top of that list. He made basketball cooler than football. Kids want to be Mac. There’s the issue with your little league. They don’t want to play football anymore because McClung make GC great at basketball. If you feel like you have all the answers, and you talk on here enough like you think you do, then go fix the problem. Volunteer to coach at any level. Go talk to school board members if you feel that strongly that you have a case. Otherwise, just shut up and stop spewing crap everywhere for anyone who will take the time to read on here. The world doesn’t revolve around Gate City football, man. It’s so much bigger than that.

  8. Folks in and around the community of Chilhowie are still in a state of shock and disbelief in the sudden loss of their former WARRIOR, Will Walker. Will was killed in a farm accident late Thursday evening near Chilhowie. Will was a outstanding running back several years ago at CHS. He was 30 years old, and a AG teacher at Chilhowie and Northwood. Will was a great person, a great husband, and a brand new dad. We ask why Lord? Only our Father in Heaven knows the answer as to why. But we can be assured that Will is with Our Holy Father now. Will won the race to get to Heaven before we did. God knows what he is doing, and he knows why. Life on this Earth throws us a curve ball from time to time, and we have to accept his actions and keep the Faith, knowing that we will all be reunited in Heaven with Will and the others that have passed before us. Please Pray for Will's family and friends. Prayer is what we all need to help comfort our loss. May OUR Lord be with us now and in the days to come. May God Bless us all.

  9. Let me start by saying that mine and my family’s thoughts and prayers are with the entire Chilhowie community over the recent, tragic news of the loss of one of their own. On a much less important note, there is a high profile football game to be played on Friday night. Last year’s game saw the Bearcats give the Warriors their worst loss of the regular season. Both teams return a high number of players from that game and are a combined 8-1 this year. Emotions will run high for a number of reasons Friday night. I expect a hard fought game from both teams. I feel the Bearcats have what most 1A programs don’t have, to allow them to match up with Chilhowie; speed. I see this game being close through 3 quarters, but I believe the power aspect of the VHS running game will eventually take its toll on the Warriors. VHS - 34 Chilhowie - 19 Good luck to the Chilhowie players and God be with the entire community thru this difficult time.

  12. Morristown is a great place to watch a game, they have outstanding facilities. They are 6A and should have plenty of depth, all the teams they have lost to, they should have lost to, so no surprises there. I think Union can match them starters with them, and would not be surprised if Union wins. I think West may just a slight favorite because of the home field, just slight though. I always like it when SW Va. teams strike a blow for the little guys across the state line but I can't get a feel for this game yet.

  13. Hey brother, no sweat! Most people outside of this matchup will take Chilhowie, and rightfully so! The senior classes of these two teams started dominating the area when they were in 8th grade. Both schools tried to work out a game at the end of the year back then, but it couldn’t be done. This will be the fourth year in a row that these groups have done battle. VHS won in 2015, Chilhowie got payback in 2016, and we won last year. It has quietly become a great rivalry, with playmakers all over the field for both sides. The region as a whole usually doesn’t expect much out of either team, historically speaking. VHS opened some eyes last year, and they honestly do have a better starting lineup than they did last year. Chilhowie took the “eye opening” even further with their kick ass season that they had. Speaking as a football fan, and not a dad of one of the players in this rivalry, I would expect this to be one of the best football games played in SWVA all season. Of course, it is high school, so we may go up there and get our asses handed to us, but I’m betting that the game will not be one-sided, as some feel.

  19. Let me have the Cats in an upset - VA High has played in close games all year, Chilhowie’s combined opponent record is 7-16 and they haven’t been tested. We are forgetting VA High only trailed 5A Tennessee by 7 going into the 4th quarter plus they are coming off a bye. Should be a close one - I think we have another shootout with a big special teams play by VA High being the difference: Cats 38 Warriors 30 this will be the second WCYB Game Night VA High has been a part of - will the game be broadcast on tv? If not how can someone keep up?

And because of this you will see football decline even more. Not just at GC or in SWVA. The risk of concussions and the media attention it has gotten are worrying parents, and rightly so. And football is pointed out as the culprit not the other sports.

  21. That seems highly unlikely based on the two links... https://heav.org/virginia-homeschool-laws/access-to-public-school-systems/page/9/ Excerpt..The Bona Fide Student and Enrollment Rule—The student shall be a regular bona fide student in good standing of the school which he/she represents. There is an obvious problem for homeschoolers with this rule: according to VHSL policy, a “regular” student is considered a full-time student who is in regular attendance. https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title22.1/chapter13.2/section22.1-253.13:2/ Excerpt...N. Students enrolled in a public school on a less than full-time basis shall be counted in ADM in the relevant school division. Students who are either (i) enrolled in a nonpublic school or (ii) receiving home instruction pursuant to § 22.1-254.1, and who are enrolled in public school on a less than full-time basis in any mathematics, science, English, history, social science, career and technical education, fine arts, foreign language, or health education or physical education course shall be counted in the ADM in the relevant school division on a pro rata basis as provided in the appropriation act. Each such course enrollment by such students shall be counted as 0.25 in the ADM; however, no such nonpublic or home school student shall be counted as more than one-half a student for purposes of such pro rata calculation. Such calculation shall not include enrollments of such students in any other public school courses. It would seem the state doesn't want to pay for them even if they are part-time since they only allow them to count as a portion related to the number of classes they are taking. And the VHSL won't consider them eligible unless they are a "regular" full-time student. So, if the home schooled student isn't taking any classes at the public school in their district then the VHSL nor the VDOE will consider them for ADM/Eligibility purposes.

The Nats have baffled the imagination for about 6 seasons now. They have gotten less out of more than any other professional sports organization over that time period. Several instances of dugout scuffles going back several years. Someone who has been around baseball at the highest levels for most of his adult life told me when the Nats shut down Strasburg in the middle of a pennant race, "they are teaching that young man how to not compete."

  27. It's risk of injury. Mostly mothers making that decision. I don't volunteer as much as I should. I don't go out and actively recruit the players but when speaking with parents that have little league age kids I try to talk them into letting them play. For the ones that live close to me I even offer to give them rides to practice.

  28. I can somewhat sympathize with the frustration of some the the Gate City faithful. I don't know how closely tied to the program Grapeape or others are. My question is whether you are a parent, die hard fan, former coach or whatever the case may be. How do you detach yourself from becoming so "emotional" when things aren't reaching their potential? I'll be the first to admit, I struggle with it. It's to the point for myself I'm not sure I can attend many more games because of getting so pissed off. Lol. Yes, I do have kids that play and yes I have help coach several years in the midget leagues.

The decline of GC football started way before Mac could slam a ball through a hoop. The decline started when Mac was still a 5’11 sophomore that was playing football. The problem isn’t that the talent has disappeared from GC. But that the talent is playing other sports. I do agree with that. Some kids on those basketball, soccer, and baseball teams could help the football team out. But they don’t want to play for the coach and focus on a single sport. The world of single sport athletes has taken over and swva as a whole is feeling that. Mac, Zac, Dean, and Compton (all 4 will be playing D1 basketball and baseball) would of helped on the football field. 10-15 years ago, those kids would’ve played football too. It’s just changed, a kid has a shot at a free education through their primary sport, hard to blame them for that.

  31. A lot of confidence coming out of WCYB darling Chilhowie! Basically both teams return same amount of talent and it was a 3td win for the Cats last year. I do think this years versiion will be close, but no way Chilhowie wins easily.

  32. I do know this much. No amount of complaining on an internet message board will help the situation. Each member of the school board has an email address. Not all of them will reply to you but there are a couple that will. Our youth football program numbers are down and part of that blame is on basketball. Not saying it as a negative. Just shows the great job our basketball coach has done over the years. Throw in the social media sensation we had the past few years on top of that. One of the things I try to do is talk to parents in my community about bringing their kids out to play football for our little league and travel ball program. Once in awhile I get one talked into it. For the most part parents I've talked to would rather their kids play any sport besides football no matter how much the child wants to play.

  36. Also, was very happy to see our boys have the NS stickers on their helmets, our coaches had the NS on their polos and the cheerleaders had purple ribbons in their hair. Byrd lost a senior girl, Nala Saunders, on Wednesday morning suddenly and purple was her favorite color. So I was really happy to see us honor her last night. Also, I thought it was very classy for the Blues to get to the 2 yard line with 1 minute left and Byrd only having one timeout and instead and scoring and going up 13, we took a knee at the 2 to leave it a 6 point win. Felt like that was a good move, especially given the fact that Byrd was playing for NS.

  37. Man what a fun game to watch. Both teams would march down the field and score at will and then go cold for long stretches. But it seemed like each time Byrd scored, Richlands answered. I kept telling the wife that if we could get ahead there at the end Byrd would have to start passing and we’d be able to pull it out. Their QB Dantzler is an amazing athlete, but he is a far superior runner. Really proud of the Blues to take this game. Horn comes back (not even close to 100%) and has a 7 catch, 184 yard and 3 TD performance. Forrrst with two 4th quarter FG including a 48 yarder that ties R. Strong for the longest in school history. MAJOR points haul right there. If they Blues were to win out after Bluefield (Big if), they would be 7-3 and have some nice wins and maybe be a top 4 seed. But there’s a lot of ball to play. Either way, proud of the boys. On to the buzzsaw that is Bluefield....

  38. Chilhowie wins with ease, 42 to 21. Virginia High is a good team, but they aren't as good as last years version. I have a feeling they may lose a game they shouldn't in the next few weeks as inconsistent as they have been at times.
