  5. Football – Games postponed due to COVID and the post-season As we prepare for the first release of football power ratings, League staff offers the following reminders: 1) We are conducting the 2021-22 football season as a “normal” season. There is no provision for additional game-weeks, plus-one games, etc. All regular season varsity games must be completed on or before Saturday, November 6. 2) Regions should have already discussed and resolved matters affecting advancement and seeding, including but not limited to advancement criteria, minimum number of games played (if applicable), etc. 3) If a school played or will play an out-of-state school, the VHSL-member school is responsible for reporting any changes to the out-of-state team’s schedule to Lora Bickley (lbickley@vhsl.org). League staff will not monitor the out-of-state team’s schedule over the course of the season. 4) Schools are encouraged to make every effort to reschedule postponed games. As a reminder, schools have the following options for postponed games: a) Reschedule and play the game b) Schedule and play other opponents c) Declare a “No Contest,” by mutual agreement d) Declare forfeiture in favor of the team not affected by COVID We ask schools to determine proactively, by October 15, 2021, if a postponed game will be declared a “no contest” or a forfeit, in the event that the schools are unable to play the game before the end of the season. Again, we encourage schools to make every effort to reschedule and play postponed games, but schools involved in postponed games should discuss and determine if a game will be a forfeit or “no contest” if they remain unable to reschedule. If after October 15 the schools are able to reschedule and play the game, the previously agreed-upon status (forfeit or “no contest”) is voided.

Oh no question, and Central too currently.I’m just saying historically Appy , PV, cwood, and Haysi were always fairly consistent playoff teams. Gate City as well. Rv and Union have picked up those traditions and consistency.

  12. Arm Chair coaching LOL: Winning formula for both teams from the arm chair--Richlands offense: run ground and pond, 4 yards and a cloud of dust, occasional slant or screen pass. Defence: Blitz one from different D-back position every play, contain QB. Taxewell offense: QB throws deep ball any where down the field, let receviers track it down, occasional run or screen pass. Defense: 2 deep safeties, stack the box, hit the QB every play. Now I know a lot will be upset about this post, but I'm sure everyone on this board does the armchair coaching thing. I hope this turns out to be an old fashion blow for blow game, with the Blues coming out on top and all players safe and respectful. Reminds me of sibling rivilary, brother on brother. Everybody is talking about the field conditions, its football, play in the mud, play in the rain, play in the snow, that's the good old fashion way and to this day the Richlands vs Tazewell Regional championship played on that same field in sloppy snow conditions when Muncy and Rasnic were star players for Tazewell is still remembered as one of the best games between these two.. GO BLUES!!!!!

  15. There was a weird obsession in the region for naming teams after weather events while including a descriptive color: Marion Scarlet Hurricane, Richlands Blue Tornadoes (one of my favs), Grundy Golden Wave, Clintwood Green Wave. All of those are unique. Let’s not forget “Bearcats”, the old Garden Green Dragons…..always wondered why there weren’t more teams names after the coal industry “miners”…prospectors, etc. There were a few years that Grundy resembled Notre Dame…looked sharp. Union’s colors are worlds better that Appalachia and PV. Graham has a classic helmet and name. I’m a fan of Ridgeview’s Gray on gray

  16. I'm a fan of Graham's originality. There aren't many schools around here that have an original logo, let alone an original name. While "Scarlet Hurricanes" isn't as cool or creative as "G-Men," I'd like to point out that Marion took that name from a local landmark back in the 20s before there were any nationally relevant teams named the "Hurricanes," which is pretty cool considering what a generic name it seems like now. As far as unis go, I usually like Abingdon's Oregon imitations. In particular, the uni coupled with the mirror "wings" on the helmet a couple of years back was a slick look. I like any helmet that has an original logo on it. My favorite was probably PH's helmet from a few years ago that had a silhouette of Patrick Henry inside the "PH."

    Week 7 updates

I posted this earlier in the year about the Union QB after watching him in game one. He WILL, and Union will have far more gains in the passing game this year in BIG games that many years past. Well, with Graham, he was huge with the run, but had some critical 3rd down passes. On 3 3rd downs in this first quarter, and two of them 3rd and long, he through the ball right on the money for the first down. I know Lomax is big, but the QB is the key. He makes Every Big play when the opponent tries to take the momentum. He did it on the basketball floor. Kid is a winner. The difference in this Union team and many years past in my opinion, and I said this earlier in the year was the QB, and to expect Union is big games to be FAR more effective with the pass When they need to be. That's exactly what has happened through the first quarter of the Ridgeview Game.

    Graham vs Bluefield.

It's going to come down to mistakes. Bluefield will make too many of them. I expect quite a bit of turnovers honestly. Between the rain, and haven't played in a month or so, Bluefield will be rusty. We've seen it all year with teams in their first game back since a COVID pause. I think for Graham it will come down to penalties. If they have too many they can keep Bluefield in the game. If Graham limits the penalties it could get ugly. I think Graham will dominate the line of scrimmage on offense and defense. I have not been overly impressed with Graham's consistency on offense compared to the last few years. I'm interested to see how effective their pass game is if it rains. All together I think Bluefield turns it over, Graham has too many penalties. It will be a wet, sloppy, and low scoring game all the way around. And it's a rivalry game so throw all the records out. Graham - 17 Bluefield - 13

  28. Giles looks to be in pretty good shape for #2 seed in region. Only way to move up is to run the table, which would include a final game win against Glenvar, or another Galax loss. I don't see either of those happening. Taking a forfeit from Auburn would be better than playing a big school and taking a loss. Plus another week of to try to get/stay healthy for the playoffs

  31. For years Richlands has dominated the district and now that their recruiting numbers are at an all time low they can’t take it. Make fun of our parades and anything else that we do on ttown, but at least we have stayed true to who we are, through the good and the bad. Will your 12th man show tonight or will he stay at home because he don’t believe in your program anymore either? Our Principal will remember to get the trophy out of the case and bring it to the game, but it’s staying in Tazewell another year! It might be raining, but the storm is CANCELED!

  32. Anymore everyone is wearing gray. I like the school colors for older fan. I watched Radford play Fort Chiswell in 2017 in a last play 26-23 game and could not tell which team was which until the first score. Both wore gray. Fort’s first home jersey in years this year, gold helmets and pants and black shirts. The way it’s supposed to be.

  34. # of games doesn't matter. Lebanon & Eastside are both open that night... and both have make-up games on Tues. the 26th. Don't know if they'll have room, though. Doesn't look like they will. Only 'good' open I have right now is Warren County, up near Winchester at Front Royal.

  35. Have to disagree with the PV Appy comments! Appy has great uniforms with the blue jerseys over white! PV want too bad with the baby blue and red. They were both better than what Union has worn the past few years! But there is really no wrong answer!

  39. Tazewell by 10 points. Richlands does NOT have the overall speed to cover in the secondary other than Webb. And Tazewell for sure......they are throwing it. They will pick Richlands apart in the passing game.
