  1. WHO IS THE SECOND BEST TEAM IN 2A? FACTORS CONSIDERED *** --Marion scored 22 points on Va High, while Graham scored only 20 --Marion scored 40 points against Lebanon in game shortened for weather at 4:20 in the 3Q. A proportional calculation results in Marion scoring 60 points on the Pioneers over 4 quarters, while Graham scored only 59. --Radford defeats both Graham and Riverheads CONCLUSIONS: Marion>Graham Radford>Graham Radford>Riverheads Therefore, Radford and Marion>Graham and Riverheads SECOND BEST TEAM IN 2A: Marion Scarlet Hurricanes ***Any other factors that contradict this assertion, I have personally deemed irrelevant or inconsequential including head-to-head, outcomes of common opponents, W-L records, margin of victory, strength of schedule, computer rankings, and common sense.

  4. And we scored 6 points on Galax so our offense is just as good as the Trojans!! We should’ve been playing Galax in the State Championship!!!!

Essex held Galax to 7. Since Giles held Galax to 14, this new logic must suggest Giles is a touchdown (or 2 safeties and a field goal) behind Essex !!!

  7. Just chiming in, but I am not aware Ronnie Davis ever being given the opportunity to be a head coach for there to be a comparison. To my knowledge, he has been very successful as a head softball coach. Boy’s basketball has been very challenging in recent years, so I’m not qualified to have an accurate opinion. Based upon my experience, he knows football and benefits greatly from his past experience at RHS and exchange of knowledge with his peers. I’m sure he’s also picked up some insights from his brief time at GHS. I don’t know enough details that other posters mentioned; however, I would counter based upon the past as a combination of career advancement and negative circumstances beyond his control. Let’s face it, as mentioned earlier, sometimes the other part of the relationship has other plans. I’d venture (results pending) if given a head coaching position or not forced to change, he would likely still be a head coach at RHS in either football or softball. Just my opinion, with little details available.

Then the NFHS needs to do better! Videos not following the play. Break aways or long passes and all the camera catches is the celebration in the endzone. The facebook folks put a better product out there for free than what people were paying for. Again, a VHSL money grab.

  10. Galax, Mount Airy and Radford all brought back state championships. Three high schools within a ~50 mile radius. Pretty impressive!

  11. Actually you beat 10 someone’s so technically makes you 10-10 on the season! .500 to end the season, not too shabby. You even beat out the Walmart Warriors! 👊

  12. Giles and Graham are also the only teams to hold Radford to 7 points in the second half so you could say our defense is just as good as the G-Men!

  13. Radford couldn’t even score on Union didn’t play but still didn’t score Union best D in 2A

  14. Giles held Radford to 35 points. That means Giles has a better defense than Appo and Riverheads along with majority of Radford’s regular season opponents. I like this new logic, it makes the Spartan defense look pretty good.

    Question...

IMO, students are ill-equipped to select a proper school name. Most have little knowledge or appreciation for local history, geography, or fauna. The results are unimaginative and generic names and mascots best suited for a Disney Channel high school.

  17. No, I said this earlier in the year when everyone was predicting a Riverheads run through 2A. When they made the finals, someone clipped it and send it back out with a laughing emoji.

  21. I don't think there's an argument, the MED is the best Class 1 district in Virginia for football. I believe any one of GW, FC, Giles and GC would have given Honaker a run. It just happened to be Galax.

  22. Giles -6.6 Galax -6.7 George Wythe -13.0 Grayson County -13.1 Buffalo Gap -14.3 Fort Chiswell -15.1 The MED hold 5 of the top 6 spots for strength of schedule in Class 1. Link should take you straight to the final rankings for Class 1. https://calpreps.com/2023/ratings/Virginia_division.htm

  25. LOL, yep, Giles held Radford to 35 so it certainly means Giles was one of the better defenses Radford played all year. Much like the Glenvar argument, the Bluefield Beavers nearly beat Graham and this means Bluefield could have stacked right up with Radford and might have been the 2nd best team in Class 2 Virginia this year if they were in Virginia. P.S. Don't pay attention to the Giles and Bluefield overall records or the other 9 games played, let's just cherry pick one data point, make a conclusion from it and stick with it, because we don't do "fallacy."

  28. I went to the game yesterday, just as a general football fan, pulling for neither team. But my god, I could not be a fan of RiverHeads. What a stale offense. Obviously it works, but it's so monotonous it's mind numbing.

I went back and slow-mowed it. Looked like the Essex player's butt was on the ground before the ball broke the goal line to me, but the NFHS angle isn't the best.

  40. I'm not sure if there is a clear top 3 Graham and Union are the teams to beat respectively in both district Second tier- can hang with the top tier should have better athletes than everyone else Tazewell- QB and best WR is back so they can still score on the lower tiers at any moment but graduation did take away some of Creasy's weapons. I expect this next season to look a lot like Harris senior year. How can we get McDonald the ball Gate City- On the rise. Bledsoe graduates which is a big loss but I am hearing that Houserights son can sling it. If that rumor is true they have pretty good skill out side to make you pay. I think their coaching is good enough to over come playing some younger players early. I would look out for this bunch Ridgeview- The only reason I saw Ridgeview is because of O'Quinn who must have taken his COVID year Third tier-Any team in this group could jump up and beat a tier 2 team but doesnt have to horses to run with a tier 1. They could also slip and and lose to the bottom tier if they have a bad day. Marion- Graduation is going to hurt this bunch, this senior class was pretty good. I think Ginn has done a great job in the weight room with these boys you can tell the difference when they get off the bus. This isnt your doormat of the SWD any more. This years team will have a lot of new faces but not young these upcoming seniors will have 3 years in Ginns feed the cats program and I think it will play off. The Flexbone is finally started to look as frustrating to opposing teams at Giles single wing. Ball control and a onside kick or too will win the Canes a few VA High- Young QB showed a lot of promise late in the year. That kid can run with the best of them. I think he will only be better and be the next "How long has he been playing" QB in the area. Their numbers where low last season which is concerning for the future but Coach Patterson is a great coach and a great person he will work those hall ways and get the kids out that he needs to be competitive. Lee- Pendergraft and Early are back and with a Coach Carroll offense they should have plenty of fireworks on that side of the ball. They Pendergraft will be entering his 4th year starting on varsity and I think he is due for a break out season. Defense was an issue at times for the Generals this last season but I am confident that Coach Carroll and staff will refocus those boys in the offseason and right the ship. Lebanon- If Reese can get any help from a supporting cast Lebanon could explode this season. Reese has the best arm talent in the region by far and if he stay at Lebanon I they have the chance to knock off anyone they play in the shoot out. The defense has got to get better for the Pioneers and they have to find a run game outside of Reese scrambling around. If they can find those two things then Lebanon is dangerous. If Reese finds himself on another roster you can bump Lebanon down a tier and move up who ever get him. Bottom tier- can catch a team above them slipping and get a win but against tiers 1 and 2 it should be a running clock in the second half John battle - Battle upset Abingdon and Lee last season but lost to close games against VA high and Holston. If they pick up wins against those 2 then they are a playoff team for the first time since 2018. IMO Battle is the toughest coaching job in the region. No other coach has to deal with playing 3rd fiddle to basketball and baseball. Hats off to Coach Ricker for putting together their best season in 5 years maybe they are turning a corner but until I see other wise they are the best of the bottom group. Central- If they got another super class it cant get here soon enough. This team was a shell of what it has been the past few years this season. At the start of the year I looked like they had new life with the transfer QB but once he got hurt it was a long year for the Warriors. In the past they had hung there hat on having a stingy D and a tough OL with a run the ball mentally until you broke. This season it looked like they had a hard time getting a first down on air and their defense was giving away TD like Opera gives away cars. Maybe they bounce back this year but it going to take some work Richlands- coming off the worst season in program history things can only get better for the blues. I lot of this boils down to who they hire as head coach but even if they get a homerun hire I do not think there is enough there to see quick results. If they give the right guy time to reset the culture and install a system that works for what they got then I would move them up but it wont happen over night. Richlands will stay down here for atleast another year or two
