Youth leagues are the problem area wide. Football does not work locally on the travel baseball model. Get back to the small hometown leagues that allow kids to compete first against each other and develop a love for the game.

I think most people have their own system. I look at who the best teams are, and who would beat who, but also I show some love to the little guys who are good down there. Everyone’s a little different in the way they do it.

George Wythe shares Region C with Galax, which means that George Wythe will not advance out of Region C. I would be shocked if the VHSL 1A Championship Game were anything other than Galax/Riverheads, not because of how down 1A is, but because those two programs are on a different plane than anyone else in 1A right now. That includes George Wythe.

VHSL has them at 503 as of March 2018. That's the number they go by for this cycle's classification. If they had an unexpected loss in enrollment they can always petition the VHSL to drop down, like Grayson Co did.

Bunch of good ones. In addition to what's already mentioned. Giles vs Narrows. Narrows fans I'm sure feel this may be there best chance and they will have some fans for sure. Ridgeview vs Gate City. I wouldn't be surprised if this is closer than many think. If your willing to drive far enough, Radford and Gretna play at Radford. In spite of Glenvar and Appo, the two best teams in Region C may be playing Friday night and a reasonable chance our Region winner ends up meeting one of these two. That will be a good game over there.

I don't believe we can pinpoint one thing as the cause. IMO, dwindling population in SWVA which has lead to lower enrollments and smaller talent pool, feeder programs are not producing lots of numbers in some places or lacking in good foundational teaching/playimg, fear of injury, focused on a single sport , etc. I've spoken to several boys and asked why they don't play. I overwhelming get one of two answers, I play travel ball (baseball, basjetball) or I don't want to get hurt.

Not sure where you read Graham isn't as good as last year. I think they are better . Giles is a little better than last year. Graham beat em 35-3 without Graham's first team All State linebacker. Giles lost to Blacksburg I think 24-0. Tazewell is way better. Graham obliterated them. Union is a solid team, but I think Graham wins by 20. If this game were to come down the wire, it would be as big of shock to me in a long time for a Graham team that is perceived and expected to win, but then loses.

Blevins kid did well with only a couple practices with the GMen nder his belt. He doesn't have Lester's speed but I believe he can match him at least in passing. I don't think the offense has shown us what their true potential is either. Defense was a little off at least in first half but getting Kastner back will help. I don't think it will be a cakewalk for Union or Graham. It could come down to the wire. Penalties could shift the momentum of the game. Graham.has had someTDs called back this year, two last night for holding. If Graham plays smart disciplined football, they win IMO. If not, Union may pull out the win.

I could see Richlands pulling this one out. Coming off a bye week, fixing & adjusting some things, Abingdon also maybe over hyped coming in to the season. Richlands needs to stop relying on Forrest so much though. Funny how they can always get to the 20-30 yard line and then just settle for 3. Need to stop settling for FG's and get the TD's. Maybe set Forrest and tell the offense to learn to not lean on him so much.

2003 PV-Sullivan Notth and 2003 TS-Unaka both had the same Tennessee crew with both Virginia teams ending up around 250 penalty yards. That was in back to back weeks.

I'm not sure what to make of Graham yet. I really don't think they have played to their potential yet. With Kastner out last night it threw the defense out of sync. Blevins stepped up and played great especially since he had to figure out the single wing offense from Giles. Offensively I thought the new QB threw a pretty ball and seems to be accurate. I knew the Ray kid had some wheels but dang he has another gear I'm not sure anybody had seen until last night. Will Union be making any videos before this game? If so please share them with us! That was good stuff last year.

I'd say it could go either way but I give a slight advantage to Richlands since they're playing at home. Lucky is the team that can secure a victory at Ernie Hicks even in a down year.

Pretty much this. Talent is cyclical when the enrollments are as small as they are.

I think a team that has some bigger guys up front and bigger linebackers will give Ridgeview a better game. Central played hard and was in position, but just bounced off of Adkins and many times just didn't have the mass to stop him.

I hope you’re right. I have no idea how to pick it. I like to think we have fixed some things in the off week, but who knows? I know Pulaski is good, but that was a big butt whipping. So I have no clue.

I think the most unwise decision Mance made in 2016 was getting rid of Snake , messed with team's mojo. He'd probably tell you that himself now. With that said, Mance is a great coach and he stays at Richlands for all eternity if he wants. I'd like to see him step up to college level somewhere when he decides to retire from HS. I think he could be an asset to programs like UVA-Wise, Bluefield College or elsewhere. He's a definite VHSL future Hall of Famer. As for rest of this season, I'd say he'll figure it out. By end of season, no one will want to meet them in first round of playoffs.
