The diehard Union fans have all given a fair assessment of their team. It's the 2nd round of the playoffs, no team is exactly a dumpster fire at this point. May the best team win!

The TSSAA playoffs started this past Friday with a record 49 teams with losing records making the playoffs 38 (public) 11 (private). The losing teams did manage a few wins going a combined 5-44. The three public school winners were R5 #3 Stratford (2-8) beating R6 # 2 Camden(5-5) 29-22 in 3A and in Class 4A R4 #4 Marshall County(4-6) ( a former State Champ) beat R3 #1 Stone Memorial (9-1) 30-29 and in a battle of West Tennessee teams with losing records R7 #4 Ripley (3-7) beat Millington R6 #1 (4-6) 31-21. THe biggest story is Davy Crockett the Pioneers won their first ever playoff game in overtime over Knox Halls 20-17 in a walkoff. They have in the last two weeks won their first District Title and had their first undefeated season in school history and play Tennessee High in Jonesborough Friday Night. I will try to keep everyone updated as the playoffs head to the conclusion at the Blue Cross Bowl in Cookeville November 29-December 1st.

Sometimes there are really, really good players that will play on Saturdays, on average to below average high school teams. Take Dalton Mullins from Wise, last year. Spent his senior year on a team that struggled, he was injured, then came back and had a good showing at the VHSCA All-Star game, and is now at Carson-Newman(I think). Some excellent football players become afterthoughts in our region when they don’t play for one of the powerhouse programs. EDIT: I’ve never been a huge fan of debating who the “Best Football Player” in an area is. Best at a position or best athlete seems like a better discussion. Just because someone is a great RB, doesn’t mean that they would be any good as a LT. No disrespect to the OP, just my two cents.

I would think that has been the plan for everybody the last 11 weeks. I have been hearing from some parents that the reason the game is moved to Saturday is so they can get an extra day of practice. Word is James Colley has been back on campus helping install the Tiger Air Raid offense. The plan is to pass at least 35 times this week. Colley's only request was to have some of the old Sandlick field brought up and put on the sideline. He wants to be able to draw up the plays in the sand with 5 leaves, 4 bottle caps, a penny, and a cigarette bud like old times.

He made Central pretty darned “special”.

Richlands will do everything in their power to shut down the run and If they can I don’t think Ridgeview has the quarter back to win a playoff game.

Ridgeview has one of those nice fields like Richlands and Mitchell Stadium have...ain't like your playing at Clintwood or Haysi...or BSG for that matter...

Chilhowie rolls, 55 to 6 Fiser will be held to a season low, not hard to defend the TOSS when you know it is coming every play. The Warriors will not be challenged until AFTER Regional play.

Unless it pours the rain all week it should be fine i don’t know how much the field got torn up against battle but unless it is sloppy mess I don’t see Graham having any issues running around

I went back and looked at the preseason poll that I bases this off of. My mistake. The pack was ranked 13. But then I saw who’s poll it was. Same goober that you went sideways on for trying to throw mud on the loss of the Johnson man. I still think Mullins is a solid option for COY however.

They were picked as the preseason favorite for the M7 by many on this board, and plenty of us called them being the 1 seed in 2D. To me, they are exactly what I thought they’d be.

This one is a no-brainer for either choice. Jeff Robinson of Chilhowie in 1A Rick Mullins of Ridgeview in 2A And if you are including 3A, Garrett Amburgey of Abingdon. Guys, he took over head coaching duties within 2 weeks of the season starting at A-town. He did a remarkable job.

That's a shame for those that wanted to attend both games in Region D.

Ridgeview will have the best player on the field with Atkins with that being said he is just a sophomore and has a lot of growing up before he is ready to play on Saturday. Also Richlands is not scared of any one player. Richlands under Mance has been the most prepared team in swva since he has been there. Richlands is very good at taking away what you do best. For Ridgeview that is running the ball with there big back and running outside with their speed back. If Richlands can keep them in check it is going to come down to quarterback play and that is not a game Ridgeview wants to get into. Unless the quarterback play has gotten a lot better since mid season then I’m calling the upset for a rematch with Graham for the region title.

Nobody is disparaging the players. Just pointing out obvious realities. Those realities can be overcome with the right gameplan. Every team has its weakness. Hopefully, we'll be prepared to exploit Graham's. Go Bears!

I have heard how Sorry Union is , how Graham is going to score whenever they want , I guess by halftime the cheerleaders will be playing. I call bullsh&@ , Union has won 9 games this year, no one has given us nothing, I heard the same line last year “there is no way a one dimensional team like Union will beat Graham” well they did. This is a different team with many many new faces. Does Graham have a great team????, at the first of the year we heard how bad they were. by their fans. We have a tough game but everyone knew that the championship for D would have Graham envolved . I have not seen Burton play but I know PH is pretty solid upfront on the offensive line. When you have the ability to move people against their will especially in a cold playoff that goes a long way in getting a win. I know PH is far from stout on defense but it’s hard to consistently throw the ball in the cold I would go PH by 2 scores

42 may be just a little off but I think it will be close to that, give or take a couple of points. Midway through the season Grundy hung 31 points on Burton. PH put 23 points on the board against Chilhowie and Chilhowie has a stout D even without the 2 starters they were missing. I think PH's back field is a bit better than Grundy as far as the running backs. Burton is talented and has grown up since the beginning of the season. I just think PH will wear down the D. Just my opinion.

Yes the same John Battle defense that held Union to 12. Burton will struggle to contain Brown and the other back.

Exactly as agreed in the original post. Of course, my familiarity of him is strictly through his tweets re: sports. I'm not familiar with his writings but no doubt he's highly respected. I've followed his 'great state' tweets through the years and would be laughing my head off with his subtle humor, also, warming was his love for 'little unit' on display.
