Richlands at Marion
cityofRaven and 2 others reacted to Plywood_King for a topic
It was a great game and Richlands is much better than their record indicates. Their early strength of schedule is starting to show through and it's obvious that they have been baptized by fire. That 50+ yard game winner from Wyatt to Medley will be talked about in Hurricane Country for a long time. I will say this about Marion: this is far from the most talented team Marion has fielded. The 2014 team, athlete to athlete would have run train on them. However, I have never in my life (with the exception of maybe the '01 team that made it the state semis) seen a Marion team with more heart, more of a will to succeed, than this team. Most of these players have been playing heavily since they were sophomores. They saw their dream team go up in smoke when Richlands came to town in 2014, they endured a 1-9 season the next year, saw a bounce back season last year that ended the worst way they could have imagined, and now they're 8-0 for the first time in 30 years. They've endured personal tragedy after personal tragedy, taken their lumps, learned how to win when the deck is stacked against them, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to get to 10-0. They're 8-0 now, but if they don't win another game this season, I couldn't be any more proud of them.3 points -

Old yearbooks for research
Mountain Football and one other reacted to Bluefield researcher for a topic
Yesterday the Library of Virginia posted some older Smyth County yearbooks from Marion, Chilhowie and Saltville. I was able to find two scores of games from 1944 from the 1945 Marion yearbook that I did not know about. Games vs Saltville and Narrows. My reason for this topic is to encourage anyone that may have had family go to school in 1950 and earlier to think about the possibility of yearbooks being in the family that may have old football scores in them. Schools that I am still looking for early scores are; Marion, Saltville, Rich Valley, Chilhowie, George Wythe (Wytheville High in the early days), William King of Abingdon, Damascus, Meadowview (aka Greenfield), Grundy, Richlands, Graham, Pocahontas, Honaker, Lebanon, Pennington, St. Charles, Jonesville, Ewing, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Pearisburg, Pembroke, Radford, Galax, Hillsville, Rural Retreat, Dublin, Pulaski, and Dante. All of these schools I have missing scores from the 20's, 30's or 40's. Maybe you see an old yearbook at an antique shop or yard sale. Maybe you could take a picture of the football page with your phone and send.2 points -
UVAOBSERVER I appreciate your candor and honesty. I respect you as much if not more than anyone on here. We have had our verbal jousting and you have put me a my place more than once over the years. You more than anyone helped me to see how stupid I was when I first started posting here. With that said, this time you are wrong in part. You are probably right in saying we are in the Gmens heads. This year I believe that the athlete's Graham has over ours will be just to much for us. Our young men will play very hard and give it their all. The speed you all have will just be too much for us in my view. The game being played at Richlands will help but I'm a realist and just see what's coming. I will be there with all of Richlands football community hollering and yelling for our young men and probably yelling at the refs to...lol. I hope you are right in your prediction. Hope to see you there. We can talk a little bit.2 points

Graham vs Richlands

If Graham had beaten Richlands at least once in the last decade, I would pick Graham by 14. But Richlands is really deep in Graham's head at this point, especially after Graham blew a 21-point lead last year. I'm picking Richlands until Graham shows me they can do it. You must be talking about 2008 @ Tazewell. We certainly didn’t play well that game. Tazewell had Matt Muncy and If I’m not mistaking he was supposed to go to Wake Forest. He was a monster. Anyways, Tihlee went on to play basketball for Va Intermont, worked as the AD at the Boys and Girls Club in Kingsport after that, and he currently works for the Scott County Sheriffs Department.1 point -

Graham vs Richlands
EH31 reacted to Unionguy_2017 for a topic
Fair enough. Can't argue that whatsoever. I think In the end the athleticism of Graham will become apparent over 4 quarters and be the difference. I'm sure Coach Mance will have a game plan put together to try to play keep away and if he's successful with that, then who knows. I'm definitely looking forward to being there to see it.1 point -
I agree to an extent. Graham has had some chances to beat Richlands over the last 10 years but during that time Graham hasn't had the better team between the two. Last year they were pretty close to being even in talent but the Lineplay & QB gave Richlands the edge. I understand that Richlands has won 10 or so games in a row against graham but like I said they were the more talented team in each case, which means they should've won. So I get it if people want to use the "Richlands is in Graham's Head" card but I don't think that applies to the pre-game talk this year - Because I think that this year most would agree that Graham is the more talented team for the first time since 2007, or maybe even 2004. If graham loses this game then I'll fully support anyone playing that card.1 point

I'll be prepping for a trip to Charlottesville to see UVA host Boston College (and God willing, perhaps even see UVA clinch bowl eligibility). If not for that, I'd be there. Richlands's defense is stout nonetheless. It could well cause doubt to creep in if the points don't come easily.1 point -

lol @ the fan bragging about beating a really bad, outmanned Central football team. That would be like folks from Central bragging about killing Union in girl's basketball. Thanks for hammering the point home that there's bad fans in all communities. Win a state title and brag. Beating a 2-6 team isn't much to brag about.1 point -

. Haven't been on the board in a long while- largely due to health and business reasons - but I appreciate the comments all have made. I live in Pound and was quite involved in the consolidation controversy in Wise County. I can assure you BearDawg that no one from Pound, especially Rocky Cantrell had anything to do with B.I. Salyers removal as coach. Everyone here was as surprised as everyone else. the reasons given for this action were silly. The front office and school administration wanted rid of B.I. The only involvement Rocky Cantrell had with athletics in the Wise area was an invitation to merge the Pound and Wise little leagues. The comments that have been made on the location of the school are spot on. There has been a significant reduction in extracurricular activities participation from the Pound area, I presume there has probably been one from the far eastern end of Wise as well. Technically Central was to be a Pound Wise consolidation- yet no meaningful attempt was made to build a school between the two communities. A school constructed at the J.J. Kelly site would have been more acceptable to most Pound people. Central exists in its present form due to a misguided effort by some members of the Wise County school board and administration to bring Norton into the consolidation scheme. Norton had the good sense to stay out. The construction expense has been terrible for the taxpayers and the location in a congested area is brainless. From the end of the war until the 1980's Wise actually had some very impressive football teams. The redoing of the attendance area once Norton became a city helped Wise considerably. In the 50's and 60's under coaches Bays and Lester Wise produced some very good football players, Al Stecker won a state championship in 1980, but was forced out as coach shortly thereafter. It is possible to have a winning team in Wise, though the competition is much tougher now. I might add that Wise actually went to court to prevent a move to AA in the possibly the late 70's or early 80's. This did not gain them a lot of respect. A major reason for the hostility of the other towns to Wise has been the spending of so much of the taxpayers money in the Wise area. The Appalachia area- the largest taxpaying entity in Wise County- has been especially shortchanged. All of the economic development in the county has occurred in and around Wise, paid for with other people's money. .1 point -
