Can't speak on the kid's reaction, but blaming it on a former coach is just dumb. GC's coach is a bum, and the mess is all his. Attitude reflects leadership. The problem starts with the SB and the AD - also bums. Acres was the only man that would take the job; no one else wanted it after 1. Meeting GC's esteemed AD & 2. seeing GC's crumbling facilities. GC finishes 2017 either 1-9 or 0-10, depending on how they play against Lee.

He's referring to the purchase of property to build a sports complex, that can't be accessed, for $2 million +. It has turned into a boondoggle. A planned VDOT road that would have given access to the property never materialized. Thus, it sits....unused. This was viewed as a huge waste of money that could have been better spent elsewhere. I am excited about this game. Coach Mance has been at the helm for 20 years, been in huge games, been the underdog and faced teams with more talent. Game plans will be equal on both sides, the X factor will be the speed, which the Bruins have. Hopefully, our Blues can negate some of the speed with adjustments and make it a good and close game. Prayers for an injury free game and for the Bruin fans traveling.

Nostalgia for sure---ate there yesterday. (I have a relative who lives out of state and when they come in this is the place they want to go.) I do like Giovanni's. Even though they are located off the beaten path, they still do good business. I love the pizza bread.

Facilities aren't the problem and they certainly aren't going to help the current talent level. Talent in small towns is cyclical and the last few years there just hasn't been enough to be competitive on the football field.

Being a former Bulldog player myself, I don't know about Marion being such a big rivalry game either. I do know things got pretty heated at the end of a playoff game over there in '87. If it was going to turn into a big rivalry, it would have definitely been after that.

The basketball is going to be fine, even after Mac is gone. Coach V has a nice program going and they will be competitive in the region for several more years. The football and girls basketball are down, but football is the money maker. The situation with football will get worse before it gets better.

I'm going to TRY (try being the operative word, here) to stay neutral.....we'll see I suppose....I may be drunk before I get there....and I don't drink....

Abingdon and Virginia High.. Kind of a rivalry I guess due to proximity. More so in Baseball. Football has been dominated by the Falcons in recent years. but still a bit of a rivalry there. Since moving to the mountain district we don't really have a district rival yet.

Drinking game idea of the day. We all listen to the game and for every time Ryan lets his homer-side loose, we take a shot. How drunk would the board be by halftime?

Giles' biggest rival right now is Glenvar. It use to be Radford before they fell off a little. I'd still consider Radford a big rival game but not as big as Glenvar now.

Their offense should be even stronger now, with adding #2 from his MLB spot to giving him more carries on O. They still won't be on Union's level, but he definitely adds a new dimension, offensively. If you go back and watch film of the benefit game, he is the one who absolutely stonewalled Zirkle in a one on one matchup on 3rd and short. The only carry I remember him having in that game, was on a 3rd and short, where he barrelled over the blitzing LB for a 4 or 5 yd gain to convert. May have been the Cats' longest run of the night lol. He may have had one other where Stidham broke thru and swallowed him for no gain, but I can't remember if that was his carry or not. From what I've been told, the coaching staff has always believed that he was the best option at RB, but with his responsibility on D, and playing on all of the special teams units, they limited his carries in the first couple of games, to give him a break. He and our QB were the only backs that we had last week, against Tn. High, that could match their athleticism. We have another RB who is a lightning fast soccer player who does great on the edge but doesn't really break many tackles. His Hudl says he's 6'0 200lbs. He runs violently, and I've been told that he's a workout warrior in the weight room. I do know that he's a good kid and that he has a couple of FCS visits lined up.

Va. High in control most of the game wins big.

I dont see UNION VS LETCHER going beyond next year, too much BS with the refs over there and the BS with the racial slurr at BIG STONE the year before. BETSY would be a much better game.As far as CENTRAL there is just bad blood there , goes back to the PV VS KELLY days, we just dont like one another.

Union vs. Central would be an official official rivalry though wouldn't it... country rivals? The way you Union folks talk about Letcher County Central, I would think that would be an unofficial official rivalry, since things get chippy every time you guys play.

Not sure if Ridgeview has been around long enough to answer that question, but for Haysi it had to be JI Burton. They never got along and the last couple of years of Haysi existence, it got very heated.

No facilities upgrades of any kind for GC sports since 1997. Not trying to highjack the thread, but GC has the worst overall (basketball, volleyball, baseball, track, softball) facilities around. The visitor's side of Legion was condemned in 2015. The SB's sports complex decision might have something to with that. I know for a fact that when South's current HC interviewed, he recommended to the AD that he stop showing candidates the facilities.

I got to see the weight room this year for the first time since the mid 90s. Definitely a shame where it is now.

You can't go wrong in my opinion with Cuz's or Bearded Moose. They both are fantastic.

I read these posts and I have to wonder what is going on at GATE CITY. I worked at WEBER CITY for 2 years during the mid 90's and the kids were great,the fan base would fight you over their kids and the coaching staff were looked upon as gods.I will be the first to say I know nothing about AKERS or his staff, but I also look at the recent problems with the baseball team and think maybe its not a school problem ,but a parent problem.IF a kid is cursing his coaches, he needs to be sent to the house, because he has no respect, and that goes back to the parent.I remember COACH BOLLING (PV 1ST STATE CHAMPION COACH)ran off a kid by the name BELLEMY who had more speed than J. JONES,and more moves than THOMAS JONES, over his mouth(kid went to prison later in life). I also have seen the last PV STATE CHAMPION have several of its players die,jailed ect because they had lots of talent but very little respect for anything else.My point is this, what do you want,A COACH WHO MAKES GREAT YOUNG MEN , OR A COACH WHO WILL EXCEPT KIDS BEING A PROBLEM ON AND OFF THE FIELD.In the great game of life , I would rather have a coach and staff that teaches my kid what is expected of him, and the championships will come....just look at APPOMATTOX.

Or Giles, or Glenvar. I really wish they would let power points determine the hosting school instead of this alternating Region stuff. It's possible that a 6-4 Region C or A winner could be hosting a 10-0 D or B winner. Not a fan.

That was an incredible team. Amazing that GC wins the title in 97 but not in 96 with what was a superior team. It just goes to show sometimes its better to be lucky than better than your opponent.

Since I have the unfortunate task of calling this game for ESPNBlacksburg, the ONLY thing I'm looking forward to this week is eating at Da Moose before the game Friday and making sure Paul (PBP) finally gets to eat there.

I think a wood carving trophy resembling the mental institute in Marion would be great for the team that loses. Because it's 2017 and everyone deserves a trophy.
