Been a while since anybody has mentioned Mike. I do have an update for those interested. He was finally able to have the surgery that was originally scheduled. His heart is up to 25% from 15%. He is now on the transplant list. Anybody that knows him knows he has been able to work a bit but still long long way to go for him.2 points

Guys, If you all could remember Mike Compton from Richlands in your prayers ! Mike volunteers to help the Blues football team and does so much to help and is a great guy, but he had a massive heart attack the first of the week and is at Holston Valley hospital and will have open heart surgery this Friday 6/24/2017 and both he and his family need your prayers ! I need to edit this, I just found out that his heart suffered more damage than first thought and he is unable to have his surgery tomorrow and is in critical care unit and as of right now it is unknown as to what type of care or when, please pray for Mike and his family, they are having a tough time right now as you can imagine. Thanks !1 point

You're right. I can't fault that. Everyone has their method of voting and opinion. So, I apologize for poking fun at you. I just choose to take the "realistic" approach. And a 1-3 SEC or ACC team isn't going to be in the top 25 in the AP poll, even if that 1-3 team is in all likelihood better than South Florida for example. Is Richlands better than some of the teams I have listed? Sure. Not going to deny it. I have been to 4 Richlands games over the last 2 years and have sit on their side each time. I like and respect Richlands. I work with a former Richlands kicker. I am taking the time to explain this to try and avoid the firestorm. However, if folks still want to bash me, then go right ahead.1 point -

Giles wore out HV in a scrimmage and has every season since we started scrimmaging them. And the top 5 in 1A Region C would all beat C-burg. I don't want to sound like a jerk but an average team should beat Cburg by atleast 4 tds.1 point -

I don't think it's whining about the travel so much as it's been higher seed hosts lower seed, aka power point winner. So, if the Region D winner has to travel to the Region C winner because they have a higher rating then so be it, but not just "because." Ultimately, it doesn't matter because if Union is fortunate enough to be the Region D winner, I will HAPPILY travel to Appo, Giles, Glenvar or wherever.1 point -
We'll have to save that for next week. Already recorded the pod and didn't see this one. But I'll make sure its in there for next week.1 point

THIS SHOULD BE BASED ON POWER POINTS,if not why even have power points, but again the VHSL -principles in central VA find a way to keep the semi finals in their back yard. It used to be "BAD FIELDS"now there as much turf here as anywhere, now they say rotate regions, but that will change next year, and at the risk of getting HAMMER SMACKED ,i say they are all sons who do not know their fathers1 point -

3/4ths of their non conference schedule is 3A+, that's true. However, I am not sure that Christiansburg and Hidden Valley could beat the majority of 2A Region D teams. And in the case of Christiansburg, I think they would lose to the top tier of 1A Region C & D teams.1 point -

I was speaking more in general. I know of a few booster clubs in SWVA that pay "volunteer" coaches a stipend that is equal to what the county pays its assistants. As far as the "may 25 cents an hour" comment, welcome to coaching. That is a given and a dumb excuse to say they worked harder than coaches today. Kids are different everywhere, not just at GC and SWVA. Not entirely their faults since parenting is much to blame but we won't get into that. Sure it is nice to have nice things but if the item is still serving its purpose but does not look shiny then who cares? I feel like 25 pounds back in 1980 is the same as 25 pounds today in 2017 so no need to upgrade weightlifting equipment.1 point -
This number is idiotic and completely inaccurate, like everything else you post. Please make some token effort to fact check yourself; I'm embarrassed for you. From Scott County Schools website HC - $5,010 1st Assistant - $3,940 Assistant Coach - $3,300 That's for a minimum 40 extra hours of work per week. Many of Bill Houseright's assistants worked for a half stipend. Educate yourself.1 point

Each week the Union Bears look better to me than the week before; and I am convinced that they have the tools to defeat Morristown West. In broad brush analysis: I believe both teams go into the game without the QBs that started the season; so loss of Turner for the Bears may be somewhat mitigated. Union's depth along the line of scrimmage is impressive and I suspect will match up well against the Trojans. Morristown has a number of swift athletes but Union has speedy players in Jenkins, Qualls, and Mitchell. I think home field advantage is important but I predict the game comes down to which team can avoid penalties and turnovers. I predict Union 24 & West 21.1 point -

You lost me again, respectfully I do write, but you lost me with the hyperbole used yet again with "parting the Red Sea."<--------hyperbole usually means "emotion" before rational thought, and I don't debate or argue with these types as it's often pointless. As for us not being good this year......... "ya don't say?" Of course we aren't good, but your argument is one with the premise of being not good is strictly talent based with very few other factors. That premise is false. The talent is there at GC. It's in the hallways. That talent is in the hallways BECAUSE of the AD and Head Coach. Because of these factors described which are root causes, you can then get to your point about us "not being good this year." Your statement is true, but it's only half true. There's a reason why we aren't good, and if you think it's lack of talent, then well, I disagree and gave reasons why.1 point -

Colobro would have won 5 games this year. Why? Because he would have had about 30 more kids out on the field to choose from. Colobro 0-10 and never had an issue in the past at GC, and all of a sudden, what are the law of averages? LOL, not likely. Your talent level is often a product of how many kids you have to choose from. How many kids you have to choose from is often a product of your AD and Head Coach. Your coaching certainly effects how talent looks to the common eye. As for Akers, I have always said this and still do. 3 years minimum is a must. I think that should be a given for any coach, even if 0-10 this year. Like I wrote, GC will be fine. Talent is down compared to where it has been, but not by much. What's down is.......the overall numbers coming out for football which is what makes up the talent pool to choose from. I don't buy the talent issue like many of you, and no, Akers doesn't "have the entire town up against him." That's a big load of horse manure. As for the talent issue, I have heard that before with a team like VT. They were on the ropes in Beamer's last years and their recruiting and wins/lossed had plummeted compared to where they used to be, and Fuente took over a team that had the lowest recruiting averages for 85 total players that VT had on its roster since pre-1999, and in 18 months, nearly a top 10 team with gameday coming. Did the talent magically get better in 18 months? LOL. Of course it didn't. It's called, coaching. What is different? The pool of talent to choose from is getting better meaning..........at the college level, VT's recruiting is taking an upward flight compared to where Beamer had it when he left, and the process is circular with good coaching, good recruiting, etc. At GC and the High School level, the kids in the hallway and not out for football go hand in hand (opposite) of the process described above with VT. It actually can get better, and it can get better quickly. Graham is an example. It takes the right AD and the right coach for that given program.1 point -

"Lord and Savior of Gate City football". hahahahahaha No idea what was going on with Doug Marrs, so I will not comment. I think the amount of time you give a coach is totally dependent on the coach's behavior/progress, and the unique circumstances surrounding the team. IMHO.....although we GC fans want to win a bunch of games, our record is not the biggest issue. I pointed out earlier that with the overall talent of our team, there is not a coach who would win several games with our team this year. Colobro was previously mentioned. I do not think he would have won a game with our team this year. However, I am certain that kids would never have been allowed to cuss him, kids would not have been allowed to skip practice, kids on the sideline would not be playing on their phones or talking to people walking on the track, he would not have alienated the majority of his coaching staff, he would not talk in the field house how his dream coaching job is just up the road, he would not have alienated the players, and he would not have had multiple players quit the team. Colobro was strict and worked the players hard. He was also respected. I am NOT saying I want Colobro to return. Just using him as an example. The players have lost respect for Akers. Unfortunately I believe it is a situation that can't be fixed. Akers is finished as the HC at GC. Is just a matter of time. The "classy" move is to replace him sooner rather than later. If the ship is sinking and can't be fixed, it is classy to take care of the passengers (student athletes) as soon as possible. I do agree that it is going to take several years to get us back to "old" GC football. I could not make it to the Union game, but believe I read that we only had 28 or 32 players dressed for the game. When is the last time a GC team had that few players?1 point -

The only foundation Reed laid was uniting the Wise community in disliking him and most of his staff quitting on him. Look at the turnover on his staff at Abingdon this year. I don't give any credit of Wise's success to Reed unless their dislike of him lit a fire under the players and coaches to prove he was the problem. Last year he had 20 plus seniors and lost to a bad Northside team in the first round of the playoffs. This year their schedule is weak. I would love to see him back at Gate City but I doubt they would hire him.1 point -

This 100% I am not sure of GCs past records in MS/JV in the past 4-6 years but I would wager mediocre at best if not below average. As an outsider, I know absolutely nothing about what Akers has done since July. What I do know is he came in with the cupboard virtually bare and NO support of past coaches who are, I would imagine, toxic to his program. I can only imagine what some of the past coaches that still work at GC are saying about him. He is literally up against the entire town who is expecting a 6-4 + season when the talent is there for about 2-8 maybe? I am not sure. As far as the AD situation goes... Who cares? besides you of course and a handful of your pals. If it was a problem it would have been fixed. Sour grapes.1 point -

You are right about 1 part of your post and incorrect on the rest in my opinion. GC fans aren't waiting half of a decade to lose. We have won before and perhaps not as patient, but I like to put it this way......we are smart fans and know football and understand quickly when we have a bad situation and don't wait 1/2 of a decade. You call that generous. I call that...not very smart. As for Gate Revenues, I am not interested, and this has nothing to do with Gate City's plight. Because you tolerated a man to do what he did for 5 years doesn't make GC's complaints "wining." If anything, one could argue or have the opinion that it makes your fans "not very smart." You don't know the issues that have gone on with our AD. You have no clue about the subject. One is obvious and in front of you though, and that is.....we have hired a guy who is not qualified (yet) to be the Coach at Great City.1 point -

With all due respect to your opinion of which I respect, we disagree. The coach is a very large problem at GC. Is he the sole problem? No. Is he the main and primary problem? Nope, he's not, but is he part of the problem? Yes, he is. The AD is the biggest problem and the root cause who has to go.1 point -

Priceless There are many examples of GC fans talking about the overall lack of talent on our team. I'm not sure a lot of people, who are responding on these threads, are understanding what is being said by several GC fans. I will not even pretend to speak for anyone other than myself. The following thoughts/opinions are my own. I'm not sure that Nick Saban would win more than a couple of games with our team this year.......and that is if we had kept everyone healthy. Yeah....we want to win as many games as possible. Hell, as a GC fan, we want to win every game and get to game 11. However.........a lot of the frustrations being directed at the HC have nothing to do with wins/loses. They are about the general direction of the program.1 point -

I specifically speak to the point of being up by a margin of 41-12 then with less than :30 in the 4th on a 4th and very long (something over 15 if I remember right) and throwing a big pass to score again instead of just running or trying to run out the clock on previous plays. I don't get upset about much but that one had me fired up.1 point
