Well, if you're going to hang out here you need to understand a few things: Union folk are never happy. Giles is experiencing a civil war. Tazewell somehow has become overrated. Graham is Graham Ridgeview will only go as far as their Dline will take them. We can't figure out Gate City Lee is on the upswing. Eastside is on the downswing. We're not sure about Burton. The whole damn board dislikes Central. We have our own internal drama, so you may not go directly to the front of the line. Enjoy.13 points

Sykes showed he could throw the ball well in the Elizabethton scrimmage, and the GW benefit game. I am taking nothing away from the current QB, the kid is an athlete and can make plays, but not from the QB position. Put him in the backfield or at WR and get him some touches, and let him make some plays. I agree he would make a difference on the defensive side of the ball as well, not scared of contact. Cochran not on the field blows my mind, the kid put in a ton of work from last season to this season, and from what I heard had a excellent summer at the 7 on 7 games, and I thought for sure he would be out there on the defensive side of the ball. Satterfield not touching the ball more than 4 to 5 times a game is just insane, Satterfield has blocked for every running back that he has played with and got his few carries here and there, and seems to always be getting tough yards, and running hard nosed, and BAM he no longer gets more than 4 to 5 carries a game......... Not sure why Union took Zach Hall from center, he has been a starter at center his whole high school career if I am not mistaken, and Izaak Keith is stout at the MLB position, and had played on the line for a couple of years, and now he's not even playing offense. I understand that you want to keep as many kids from going both ways as much as possible, but when the job is not getting done, it's time to suck it up, and put your best 11 out there, whether you have to have kids going both ways or not. Sitting at 3-2, with Thomas Walker, Ridgeview, Abingdon, Central and John Battle left, you would think changes would be made, and the best 11 would be placed on the field, no matter whose mommy's or daddy's get their feelings hurt.3 points -

I never said that GW was a βpushoverβ. GW is a decent enough team that will probably meet Galax for the 1C title in Week 3 of the playoffs. That being said, which GW team will show up? The one that played Radford tightly in Week 1 or the one that eked out a win last week over Rural Retreat? Regardless of which one shows up, Graham is an entirely different animal than theyβve seen thus far. Graham isnβt putting up 60 points on anybody this year, but they win games with 28-45 points by grinding other teams into submission. Thatβs what I think will happen to GW. Graham will score its customary 35-ish points and what GW scores will be exclusively against Grahamβs reserves. A Ram truck puts up pretty good resistance, but it doesnβt matter when it meets a bulldozer. Thus I see this game.2 points -
Heckuva ballgame. The Dogs scored late in the 3rd to make 7-0. They stopped GW 3 times inside the 15 yardline on downs, once on the 2 right before half. GW blocked a 26 yard fg with 1:20 to go in the game and were moving the ball but Martinsville had a pick 6 with 17 seconds left to seal the win. Was a really good high school game with a great atmosphere. GW is very young this year so this was the Dogs chance to get them. First time we have beat the Eagles since 1987.2 points

This mindset is likely one of the main reasons for the decline in long-term coaching careers. It seems that many of the area schools change coaches almost every other year. The demands of coaching now require dealing with the effects of changing values and prioritization of those values. Among these, expectations of instant gratification in the form of βwin nowβ, despite the culture of βme firstβ over team. I, imagine, resignations to spend time with family, indeed the right decision, is because the requirement to spend more time year-round to win, without long-term appreciation and support for teaching valuable lessons. Instead, itβs βdo what I want, so that I can be a star and get a scholarship.β This isnβt meant as an indictment on any individual, but how our society is becoming as a whole. Coaches are often the means to and end, nowadays. I was very fortunate to have played in an era where the values were more predicated on hard work and teamwork. I can point to the application of those values in my life every day. I can really appreciate those who continue to Coach for the right reason, despite more effort for fewer rewards.2 points -

I donβt see anyone bashing #10, like I said I think heβs one of the most athletic kids in the Mountain 7! Does that mean he is the best option for QB? I donβt think so, when James Mitchell played QB in the Wildcat when Turner got hurt that year, yes Mitchell was probably the most overall talented kid on the field at any game Union played, but that donβt mean you want him being your starting QB! To whoever said, until Union shows a little passing game and shows teams they can complete a few and try to keep the defense honest, they will see 11 men in the box, with all 11 coming to stop the run with no worry at all about the passing game, is this #10 fault?? No definitely not, but at some point a few changes have to be made, or you will never make it past Round 1! Id hate to see the Sykes kid leave, but as a 10th grader, that could start on most teams around here, I can understand the frustration, everybody says βoh he is young, and hasnβt had the experience at the varsity levelβ, are also the ones seeing 3 and 4 freshman starting as well, and I have no problem with freshman starting if they are 1 of the best 11 on the field!1 point -
Nobody on here is debating his mobility or athletic ability. He's an asset to the team, but at QB you have to have an arm, Gone are the days of lining up and running all over folks. If you want to go far you absolutely have to throw the ball effectively to keep the defense honest. Right now to stop predictable Union just load the box.. This has to change or it will be an early exit.1 point

If turner has made any good decision this year it is keeping #10 at QB. Tired of yβall bashing this kid when he is a top player in the district. Yes Sykes has had his moments but I would much rather have 10 running my offense. Yβall are forgetting the fact that the O line is gonna be the same and the Sykes kid will not escape pressure as well as 10 does. Yβall need to start thinking about the other factors of switching QBs . Throw power, footwork, mobility is all 10 while the Sykes kid has slightly better accuracy but hardly at all. 10 has turned many what should be 10 yd sacks into 10-15yd gains this year.1 point -

Union will no doubt win this week, but the question is by how much. Union was better than Gate City by at least 3 touchdowns just had mental mistakes with the bad snap and mis communication on the 4th down in the late 4th quarter and had terrible coverage on any pass past 10 yds. D-line struggled at times but for the most part #70 done his job. Need more from #33 and #16 on the defensive side. Would love to see a 5 front with 33 and 16 on the edge and adding 52 at nose guard with 70 and 62 at DT. the two CBs are no good for use. The Bostic kid is for sure the better defender but is also a freshman and has much room for improvement. The senior on the other side has so excuse. On the offensive side you have what should be one of the most talented ones in the region turned into an average offense with 2 below average receivers which once again like defense the freshmen is better but also has room for improvement and the senior just needs to be taken out. would love to see the Cochran kid get some PT on both sides this week against T-dub and see how he does. though he played good in the Elizabethton scrimmage with a couple good break ups at corner. Against Gate City #13 should have had at least 15-20 touches along with QB1 #10 needs to have a chance to drop back and throw to his receivers (which should be #4, #7, and #23) the Bostic kid needs to be out there too some but plays need to be directed to #4, #13, and #10. Another problem Union had against gate city was chewing clock. Union has one of the best "chew clock" formations ever with the T formation. Give the ball to #28 and pound and give it to #13 and #17 every now and then in that formation. #17 does his job with or without the ball and that is what makes him a necessity on both sides of the ball. Turner also needs to trust #10 with the ball and let him be the mobile QB he is. He can drop back when needed but can also take off on any given occasion. Now speaking of the offense, the O-line needs redone almost completely. you have to have #70 in there as a 3-year starter there was no need to pull him off at all this year. #61 has been completely disappointing this year blocking the edge on any type of run or pass. I honestly feel bad for the Anderson kid as he really just runs for his life on most passing plays and honestly gets positive yards most of the time. Thomas Walker might score a pity touchdown with Jv team and probably a passing one against #18 in but should be Union dominating all game. Calling 51-16 Union1 point -

Not knowing, speculating, or even having a particular dog in the fight, my opinion based on observations in recent years is that the pendulum with the culture as a whole seems to have swung toward the individuals from the team aspect, likely along with the growth of various travel ball sports. That said one of the challenges of coaching that is more complicated than parenting, speaking from limited experience in both roles is advocating for everyone elseβs children and not just your own. Sometimes time spent with one child means not spending time or attention with another. Coaches must bear a great deal of responsibility to make reasonable decisions, rather than emotional ones that we parents have to make. In my experience, the truth is usually somewhere in the middle between opposite perspectives.1 point -
