I think the Union fans need to calm down a bit. Your season isn't over by any means. You lost to a team that has a legit shot at winning region. You still for the most part control your own destiny. Plus its pretty obvious that there is no clear cut favorite to win the region (maybe Graham). The playoffs around here in 2d should be really good. Especially the semi and championship round,. Then we will sacrafice that team to Appomattox for Peace on Earth!4 points

I am going to say something as someone from Big Stone originally and someone who has spent time away. I support the kids at Union. But to be quite blunt, they made a terrible effort tonight. Union has a great football program. It’s great what they have going on. And it’s fun more often than not to watch them. But the fans have got to quit acting like the team is unbeatable. Union is clearly not unbeatable and it’s high time people in Big Stone and Appalachia realize that. They made uncharacteristic mistakes. There were players trying to be heroes. Refer to the muffed punt. He should have let it roll. But you live and you learn. Central outplayed Union and they deserved every bit of that win.3 points -

Just a few thoughts from last night. GHS coaching staff and players made one heck of an in game adjustment to stop VH's offense. Looked as though it was going to be a track meet at first. Bradshaw is still the fastest on the field that I've seen so far this year. Again, Graham cut down on the dumb penalties!! It was one of those games that even though you have a big lead you didn't ever feel comfortable until there just wasn't enough time for a comeback. V-High is a very good team with some great athletes. Graham is just playing great football and clicking on all cylinders now. Looking forward to see how the G-Men match up at Pulaski!2 points -
22 years ago today....

Copied this from the Facebook group I run, Mountain Empire High School Sports Discussion. Wanted to post it here as well. October 15, 1999. 22 years ago today, two of the most memorable high school football games ever in Southwest Virginia played out roughly 10 miles away from one another. The Haysi Tigers fell behind 28-0 to the Pound Wildcats in the first half of their game at Dotson-Mullins Field. The Tigers would pull off an improbable comeback winning 34-28 in OT. Meanwhile at Carroll Dale Stadium in Wise, the JJ Kelly Indians were pulling off a monumental upset at home against the Powell Valley Vikings. The Big Stone Gap crew were in the midst of a 34 game winning streak and showed no signs of slowing down over the first half of the 99 season. The Indians played ball control all night and stunned all of SWVA winning 19-14. The aftermath of that night is well known. Pound would recover from the loss to Haysi and make it all the way to Lynchburg to play in the Class 1, Division 1 state title game, losing to Surry County. The Vikings downfall would continue as they fell in the first round of the Class 1, Division 2 playoffs to the Clintwood Greenwave. Haysi would fall to Honaker also in the first round of the Class 1, Division 2 playoffs. Kelly, even with the monumental upset of the Vikings, failed to even get to the postseason, finishing with a 6-4 record. To all of my SWVA folks in the group, were you at either game that night? What are your memories of either game? Or, if you were at another game, talk about that. Lol. It's the one night I vividly remember even years later, since I was at both games back and forth.2 points -
Being on the outside looking in at both programs during the game tonight. I don't see what GW could have done much differently on offense. Galax just shut them down be in the running game, runs to the outside was chased down all night and everything up the middle was stuffed constantly. The most successful play was the QB read where he lept the ball and ran around he end a couple times and that's because the DE bit on the dive. The passing game was a bit better, your QB was rusty rightfully so but Glaax had good coverage most of the night. On defense you had guys in position many many times but just got ran over or juked out. Galax had receivers running open all night the QB just missed them or was dropped. It was a scheme it was an out athlete in that regard. And as far as seeing heat Galax has In a few years you are probably going to be severely disappointed as their Jv is stacked. Is there a dripnoff from Dixon to Allen? Absolutely, as there would be with 90% of anybody that followed him. Although the drop off will not be as step as many would hope. Galax just has talent that reloads every year. I hate to say it but we are all going to have to go through Galax for the foreseeable future to win the region.2 points

From King William, VA King William 62, Defending 3A State Champion and undefeated Lafayette, 41 King William is for real guys. I favor them over Draft, Poqouson, Buckingham, and Nottoway to represent the East in the state title game. They lost to Goochland early in the season with 8 players out due to Covid. For anyone familiar with eastern VA, it's well known that Lafayette is no joke.2 points -

I honestly don’t mean this to be offensive to the George Wythe faithful. Y’all have been saying for two years, Allen can’t coach. Riding high on Dixon’s former players. I believe 12 of the 38 players on the current roster actually played for Dixon. At some point, reality has to set in.2 points -

Battle of the Undefeated: VA High vs Graham
Mountain Football reacted to Real Sasquatch for a topic
I agree. Graham is improving every week, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Virginia High was more impressive then I expected. Graham is tackling much better then early in the season and they have made a few minor tweaks on defense and it is working for them. The defense will only get better. The freshman, Hill is getting better each game with experience. Vineyard and Wallace are starting to understand their roles better. The younger Meadows seems to have recovered from his injury fully and making tackles and Hughes has really stepped up on both sides of the ball as a blocker and tackler. Graham is a much better team at this point then they were in the first 2 or 3 weeks. Seems as if they do this each year lately, good deal of defensive improvement throughout the season. Bradshaw has been quiet the past couple of weeks (Graham didn't really use him much, they didn't need him to win), but he was targeted more last night and he went off. It will take one heck of a team to beat them going forward.1 point -

If I were Galax, I'd take the forfeit. Likely no small school would play them, and they could risk their #1 seed if they pick up a big school and lose. Giles should do the same the next week. Giles should be #2 seed if they beat James River next week. That gets you 2 home playoff games, as long as you take care of business. Plus an extra week off this late helps with injuries.1 point -

I take issue with this. There are many Graham fans on this board who are not like that. Unfortunately, every fan base has cocky fans, the loud lady that screams at the refs all night, etc. You can categorize the majority of a fanbase by a few. If someone states Graham has the best record in Region D or Bradshaw had a phenomenal night. Those to me are factual statements rather than cockiness. Cockiness would be saying, no one has a chance to beat Graham and that’s simply not true. Region D is tough and whichever team comes out on top, they will have worked for it and I will cheer them on against Region C whether it’s Graham or someone else. I don’t think my thoughts & opinions are worth two cents on here and definitely not cockiness but there are few that think they are ESPN football experts😂😂😂😂😂 and in reality, nah. Most of us just want a friendly back & forth about high school football. Rant over…must be the rain! 😂1 point -
I fully agree with you about Nelson. Will say this tho. Appo played alot of the bench and kept clean uniforms in the game for 2nd half and stil managed to score and keep Nelson scoreless. Appo is starting to click better and in the next few weeks with no injuries or covid issues i fully expect to see a team more than ready for playoffs. Hate to bad mouth Nelson, i have to give them a ton of respect as they never quit and played with heart and left their all on the field, great bunch of young men.1 point

Agree. Like I wrote above, didn't see the game, but here's the thing with Unions offensive system. It shortens the game and limits possessions often against more explosive offensive opponents like Graham and even Ridgeview. The disadvantage is.....it's hard to get separation from opponents that you may be better than, and if you had a couple of turnovers, it's a problem. It's why Union can seemingly outplay a Graham team, but..... even though gashing them on the ground, it's hard to get separation. Yes, you are limiting a team like Graham's possessions, but you are also limiting your own. I'm just saying it's a double edged sword. With all the above, flip side is....Union can lose three games this year and it won't matter. Because of Unions offense, they will be right in the game with ANY team in Region D come playoff time, and if they don't turnover, in a position to win the game (even against Graham)1 point -

Or you might be like our friendly neighborhood puppet who just cant accept the fact that someone had the balls to state the obvious 1. Some people are skeptical of the vaccine, 2. That folks who are taking Ivermectin arent wackos and shouldn't be treated as such. According to you and CNNOBSERVER anyone that even thinks about going against the MSM narrative is a conspiracy nut or some kind of genocidal maniac or Trump disciple. What is wrong with the 2 facts that I posited? If you cannot agree that there are reasons for people to be skeptical of the Vaccine, you are a tool. The fact that you have the ego to mock people that have been prescribed ivermectin as well as the medical professionals that wrote those prescriptions tells me that you are a shill for the the narrative. God forbid anyone say something that makes sense.1 point -

A few things: (1) Though nurses serve a critical and under-appreciated function, they are neither epidemiologists nor physicians. The job functions are interdisciplinary, not equal. Frankly, a sizable minority of nurses have done some harm by using their standing to prescribe treatment, which is not their job. Equally, my wife, who works with numbers, should not be giving corporate tax advice. It’s a different field. (2) Therapeutics are fine and dandy, but preventative measures should always, ALWAYS be sought if at all possible. There’s significantly reduced chance of even getting to “at the onset of COVID” with the vaccine, much less praying that horse worm paste keeps you on this planet. If someone wants to eat horse worm paste after contracting a breakthrough infection, YOLO I guess. (3) The whole “personal choice” dogma stops when it affects others’ capabilities of receiving medical treatment for their own conditions. And that absolutely has happened. I can’t get my elbow scoped so that I can bowl without pain because 100% of resources are dedicated to COVID-19, something that the vaccine keeps from happening at an 89% clip. We’re cool, but I just want to clarify a few things. Good luck tonight!1 point -

https://journals.lww.com/americantherapeutics/fulltext/2021/08000/ivermectin_for_prevention_and_treatment_of.7.aspx This was shared with me by a relative who is an RN. She was sent the article by a doctor at the VA. In addition, I know many people (personally) not TV folks who were prescribed this by local physicians at the onset of Covid, none of them ended up hospitalized. I am vaccinated but I also believe others have to right to decide whether the vaccine is right for them & doctors should be free to treat their patients with Covid the way they think is best. I absolutely agree there should be a bigger focus on therapeutics because vaccinated and unvaccinated folks are contracting Covid.1 point -
Look at it from this perspective: Yes one win came in very unfortunate circumstances at Rye Cove, but last weeks win against burton was so back and forth and they DID NOT back down! This is a team that is gaining confidence, experience, and valuable football wisdom. The offensive talent is there. It will take time to build a winner, but it seems if they can continue to improve their technique on the defensive side of the ball, they will win a few more games this year.1 point
