    Marion 🤔

I agree with you both. However, when I think about it, the games aren't for the fans or the money they generate. They're really for the players. If it weren't for the kids that wanted to play, there wouldn't be a team. No team, no game. No game, no fans. No fans, no money. Does a 1-9 team "deserve" to be in the playoffs? No. Does that senior that loves the game, and maybe is in a bad situation due to inept coaching or poor turnout deserve one more chance to put on that uniform and play the game we all love? Absolutely!! If I was a HS senior, I would be ecstatic to play just one more time. Even if I knew I would get beat to death. Lol Just a thought.

Rookie Post...not Rookie LPD I was fortunate to play against Coach T. Dotson..Mr. Riggs..Mr. Harry Frye..PV Coaches..Coach Dave Ryder and Mr. Cummins. We would have taken care of this situation in the locker room or on the practice field..BEFORE it occurred on the field/court/diamond. The Helicopter Moms..Lawnmower Dads..Grandstand Usta' Bees have weakened the character and ownership responsibility of our student-atheletes. I will not be popular on this Forum so bring it.

I can’t go on record as much in this realm, but I will say that if the School Board closes TCCTC, it will be the worst mistake that body has ever made. We have a population here that is PERFECT for vocational training, and taking that away would be utterly devastating, to put it very kindly. We don’t have the demographics to be a white-collar job mill. We have the demographics for practical training, and it saddens me to see just how much it’s already been placed on the back-burner.

Hello everybody. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been on the boards. Nearly 5 months now. While I won’t go into exact details — I felt it necessary to get away and take a break from most forms of social media. I left the board and also left Facebook for over 2 months. I used that time to look inward, instead of always looking outward and trying to find the negative around me. Through it all, I feel like I’ve started to turn a corner in my mental health. My family has went through the gauntlet this fall and winter. Multiple deaths — many due to Covid — have taken away people I loved dearly. Rifts with family and friends. Personal health and financial hardships. We’ve been through it all and come out (so far) stronger. Over the last several years, I’ve become unnecessarily combative to those around me — and that includes many of you here. For that, I am sorry. I’ve seen the pattern of who I was as a human, and continue to strive to correct that flaw on a daily basis. I don’t always win the battle — but I am determined to win this war. I hope that you can forgive me for things I may have said or done in the past that were out of line and unnecessary. If not — I understand that as well and truly respect where you’re coming from. I did years of damage to relationships and friendships that aren’t easily repaired. In any case, I am excited to get back and talk local sports with all of you. We are so lucky to be alive and healthy and able to talk about our amazing athletes from Radford to Ewing (hey Brady). Also, a huge thank you to GMan for checking in on me in what was a low point. I really do appreciate it.

You know what the Hell you were doing. Your first post was absurd, and it’s preposterous that you feel the need to defend it. Regardless the reason, a young man has passed away, and it’s basic human decency to avoid taking shots at someone. Were this my board, I’d permaban you for this.

I think if any school is looking for any kind of coach in any sport they need to come to Eastman in Kingsport because there are probably around 2000 of the 8000 that work here that believe they can coach any sport and they would do it for free because they already have a day job!

I’ll say this for any players who may be reading this board. I’ve always found it true that if you focus on doing the little things right, the big things and the accolades will follow. Stay hungry; don’t go fishing for attention; don’t read your own press clippings; and keep making yourself better every day.

Will a single game be played?

Our public figures, in both political persuasions, have done a borderline unethical job of setting public expectations for this virus. One of the things Flip-Flop Fauci actually did correctly was to temper expectations for the vaccine, because the results wouldn't be a known quantity for some time. It was unclear if the vaccine would work like the flu vaccine (significantly cut the risks) or like the measles vaccine (wipe the sucker out). Turns out, the results are more akin to the flu vaccine, which is A-OK. However, expectations were set at an impossible level. What I cannot agree with is that the "bar was lowered". mRNA vaccine technology has existed since 1991. There was a SARS vaccine (COV-1) that was about 90% done but shelved due to the lack of presence in Asia for some time. The whole "we don't know the long-term effects" is a complete red herring, plain and simple. We have known for some time that the supposed "long term" effects of a vaccine usually manifest extremely quickly. Lo and behold, that's exactly what happened here. We found out that the J&J vaccine will cause blood clots in a microscopic percentage for women. Moderna #2 will make a lot of folks feel cruddy for about 24 hours. And, that's it. If anything "bad" was going to happen, it would have happened in the first 340M data points. To fit your analogy, it's not like 60% suddenly constituted an A. It's more like you took a 3-week summer course that would normally be a 3-hour fall/spring course. You still learned everything you needed to learn, and the final exam was just as hard. But it passed, not with an A, but probably with a B+.

Allow me to clarify. It's not that it had been 6 years since they beat Amherst. Last night's victory was apparently the first for Liberty (formerly Bedford) Middle School in ANY football game since 2012. My 2nd born son is a member of the team (mostly bench sitting WR/DB this year) and he was only in for a couple of plays. But he and his teammates are walking a little prouder this morning. I asked him what they did to commemorate a win the next day in school (like wearing their jerseys, for example). He obviously didn't know. Sorry that this isn't SW Virginia related or probably even of interest to very many people. Just wanted to indulge in my own little Moment of Zen.

    Richlands at William Byrd

Also, was very happy to see our boys have the NS stickers on their helmets, our coaches had the NS on their polos and the cheerleaders had purple ribbons in their hair. Byrd lost a senior girl, Nala Saunders, on Wednesday morning suddenly and purple was her favorite color. So I was really happy to see us honor her last night. Also, I thought it was very classy for the Blues to get to the 2 yard line with 1 minute left and Byrd only having one timeout and instead and scoring and going up 13, we took a knee at the 2 to leave it a 6 point win. Felt like that was a good move, especially given the fact that Byrd was playing for NS.

To be honest, that is what I wanted my original website to be like but I didn't have the time to put in the effort to do all that...that's how it ended up as a forum only. Now, these guys have stepped up and have done a tremendous job in gathering information and putting it out there. I will continue to be here, and hopefully, they'll continue doing what they are doing and these three sites will be the best you can find in Southwest VA and Southern WV. I also have to give a ton of credit to VHSLhelper...what he does is also a tremendous addendum to everything that is here now!

Will a single game be played?

The battle lines for this were drawn when these vaccines were in Stage 2 of their clinical trials. Unless Jesus and Donald Trump hold a joint press conference encouraging people to get the vaccine, no public sentiment will sway the ~30% of "never vaxxers". The only thing that's going to get through to them is to have their father, mother, sister, brother, or child die from COVID-19. That's the ONLY way, and it's so disheartening. It took having my church's children's pastor die for my church's congregation to start giving a semblance of a damn about it. And I've known so many people who thought it was "just the flu" until they had to see the effects of it Clockwork Orange-style. People who get their "news" and medical advice from sites like americanpatriot.baldeagle.beatthelibtards.trump.us aren't going to listen to logic. They aren't going to look at how stark the difference in data is between vaccinated and unvaccinated people. They're only going to listen when they have to carry the casket of someone who died from it. Until then, the stronger their views can be marginalized for the worthlessness they are, the better. If not for that ~30% of the population, we'd have this thing in the rearview mirror. Instead, we have ~30% of the population brainlessly volunteering themselves to be the control group in this Machiavellian experiment, volunteering themselves to be the breeding ground for sneakier (if weaker) variants of COVID-19 that will eventually evolve to evade vaccines altogether. I'm growing weary of missing activities I used to enjoy and taking umpteen safety precautions to help protect people who don't give a flying fig about protecting me. I'll still do it, because I still love them, but I believe some righteous indignation is in order.

    It's been a fun ride!!

Well my years as a "Raiders Football Dad" have come to an end. Kind of a big pill to swallow for sure! My oldest son graduated in 2018 and finished his years as a Raider with a 54-3 record and accumulated three championship rings along the way. My youngest son will graduate this year. He finished his years as a Raider with a 47-5 record (senior year only had 6 games) and accumulated three championship rings along the way. As a Raider Dad over the past 6 years I've watched my boys be part of a program that has gone 77-5!! What a blessing!! Even more so than the record is the fact that they got to play under Coach Smith and his staff (Coach Stephan Castello serving as interim HC this year). They pushed these kids to be their best and spent countless hours preparing to help their teams be ready to compete. Coach Smith has gone well beyond football with the boys and for many of them (mine included) is a pillar for them to have faith in for the future. During this time I've enjoy two trips to Big Stone Gap and had the privilege of witnessing an awesome OT game against Richlands in 2015.

    Fields

I don’t know about the coalfields, but we do it the RIGHT WAY here in Smyth County. Once a field is selected, fans will complain incessantly on Facebook and implore local media to escalate the situation. At that point, a hometown “hero” will write to our local State Senator requesting him to intervene. The Senator then contacts VHSL Administrators who in turn select a more “suitable” field.

You probably feel that way because you are a Richlands fan, to me, nothing comes remotely close to Bluefield-Graham. What other game has people coming from hundreds or even thousands of miles once a year to watch the game, regardless of how good (or bad) the teams are that particular season. Also, I'm not trying to be mean or ugly by any means, but this thread is about Bluefield vs. Graham, let's please stick to the topic. You will have plenty of time to discuss Richlands vs. Union.

Given my age, I fall square between Generation X and the Millennials (though technically I fall in the latter category, I have little in common with 1990s babies). When I was 5, I had 13 channels on TV. When I was 17, I could download 1000 songs per week off the Internet. This is a prelude for what I’m about to say. There’s a constant pining on this board for the good old days, when men were men; when every single boy played football; and when a succession of presidents with dreadful foreign policy had the U.S. embroiled in unwinnable wars. In case y’all haven’t noticed, our population is on average roughly 25% less than what it was back then. Since fewer of the remaining 75% are having babies than their ancestors (mostly because the young ones fled the region leaving the old ones behind), our schools are roughly 40% smaller than in the era of LSD and 8-tracks. For schools like Pocahontas, that means closure. For schools like Garden and Whitewood, that means consolidation. For every 10 linemen you had in 1974, you have about 6 now. What used to be depth now is simply having enough to play iron-man. In addition, what most of the Baby Boomers and Gen Xers bemoan as “picking up a controller” is in reality becoming more oriented in STEM and electronics. I hate to break this to anyone, but coal will never again be what it was in 1973. Information technology (IT) is the backbone of our future economy. The boys that used to bale hay and dig ditches in the summer, which lends itself to a sport like football, are now learning to code and program, which doesn’t lend itself. Every generation has its lazy kids, and this generation has it in the exact same proportion as did the Baby Boomers and Generation X. The kids who lay around smoking dope and play Fortnite today are the same kids who laid around smoking dope and playing guitar terribly in 1975. There were probably more of them in 1975, because there were more people in general. Far be it from me, though, to criticize the generations who gave us the pet rock and pension systems that irreparably leach the retirement funds of the younger generations to subsidize themselves. It’s ALL because the kids of today are lazy and worthless. The kids of today will be responsible for repairing the mess left behind by the generations who are criticizing their work ethic. And I, for one, am not going to ride them like Seattle Slew, even if it means that we have fewer kids playing football. Rant over.

Hey buddy. I try to stay off of forums on here because of lunacy like this. However, this is pretty terrible. In all honesty, it is in the top two worst posts I have ever seen on here. Maybe it is because I had a connection with Devon. That guy was my friend. We grew up together. We played together. He was one of the nicest guys in the world. Tonight, a son is gone. A mother, brothers, nieces, nephews and many other extended family members and friends are heartbroken. 25 years old and gone way too soon. Who gives a damn how he passed away? He represented our area in a fine light. I think anyone on this board will admit that. That was my boy. I don't appreciate your ignorance.

    Old Richlands controversy

Did they change after each play or each series? Or did the offensive team get the cleats while the other team played in socks? Or was it the defensive team that wore the cleats? Did they change by position? That would suck if you were a wide receiver who wore a size 9 and the opposing wide receiver wore a size 13. And this begs the question, why couldn’t Richlands or Salem afford their own cleats? Why did they have to wear the same cleats? And how in the hell did one of these teams make the playoffs playing an entire season without cleats? This needs to be an entire podcast episode, like a 30for30 or something
